Thrissur Pooram History
The Thrissur Pooram is one of the most spectacular temple festivals in Kerala, India, celebrated with immense grandeur, tradition, and community spirit. Hereβs a concise history of this iconic festival:
Origins of Thrissur Pooram: Established by Sakthan Thampuran (Rama Varma IX), the Maharaja of Cochin, in 1798.
Before its inception, the Arattupuzha Pooram was the most prominent festival in the region.
Temples in and around Thrissur were often excluded from Arattupuzha due to late arrival.
In response, Sakthan Thampuran unified ten temples in the Thrissur region to create a new, inclusive festival β Thrissur Pooram.
Location and Main Participants: Celebrated at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in the heart of Thrissur city.
The two main participating groups are:
Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple
Thiruvambady Sri Krishna Temple
They represent the eastern and western factions, respectively.
Key Highlights: Kudamattam (Umbrella Display):
A friendly competition where vibrantly decorated umbrellas are exchanged atop elephants.
Elanjithara Melam:
A world-famous traditional percussion performance with hundreds of artists.
