Featuring- “DENTAL INNOVATIONS INDIA PVT. LTD.”

At a time when India is being looked at as the next big knowledge superpower, it is quite shocking to note that India contributes to only 3.5% of global research output. It’s not that research isn’t carried out in our country; problem is the lack of exposure. Even to this day, Dentistry is not considered as a research avenue in India. Being a dental research scholar in US isn’t unheard of, but in India? You can hardly find anyone who knows what the term means.

Research in dentistry is also being carried out in few elite institutions like AIIMS, Delhi, but that’s that. Dental professionals elsewhere are still oblivious to research. For most students entering into BDS, the motive is either to crack the uber tough MDS post-graduation entrance exams, or to start up clinical practice. Once someone goes into the rut, its hard (read impossible) to come out of it.

Nothing in this world is perfect. So, naturally, there is room for improvement everywhere. Even in dentistry there are a lot of things that need change, or even if not needed, change would be much appreciated. While working on patients, or even randomly too, lot of ideas pass on inside our minds. Some of them are fiction, some of them, maybe not. Either way people are so busy in their routine that they aren’t able to do justice to their ideas. Maybe the idea is fiction... maybe it’s totally impossible, but then, wasn’t everything that is possible today, considered impossible at some point in history? Unless the idea is worked upon, we may never find out whether it would’ve worked or not. To not let any idea cross the threshold of oblivion was the idea of our start up.

We are a Dental Think Tank. We turn dental ideas into reality. If someone has a breakthrough idea related to the field of dentistry that might come to benefit the masses, or maybe just an idea (we help them make it breakthrough), they get in touch with us. We have an interdisciplinary team to guide us into collaboration with various other fields of science and technology to turn the idea into an actual prototype.

ONGOING PROJECTS

1. OPTIQUR –

‘Composite’ is a restoration material very commonly used in dentistry all over the world. It has a clay-like consistency which can be moulded in the patient’s mouth to the desired shape and then hardened (cured) to give a ‘tooth-like’ hardness. Composite cures (hardens / sets) by an internal polymerization reaction which is initiated by an external curing device, for example, Quartz Tungsten Halogen lamp, Plasma Arc Curing unit.

Our product, “Optiqur” is a light curing device which can be attached to the dental chair so that it utilizes chair’s light as the source to cure the composite. It is a cost effective alternative to the other curing machines which eliminates the need of an external power source as it utilized the inherent light of the dental chair itself. This invention has been filed for Patent. (Application no. 5416/CHE/2013).

2. PORTABLE DENTAL UNIT –

Currently in India, the dental camps held in the villages are screening (check-up-only) camps and not treatment camps. After screening, patients are referred to their nearest dental center for treatment which most of them miss. Since dental problems aren't given any importance until they involve pain and interferes with regular activities, patients with severe problems are treated but other problems like caries (without pain), thorough cleaning of teeth, etc. are missed. This causes poor dental health in the villages and therefore poor public health in general.

One of our on-going projects is a Portable Dental Unit which consists of a fold-able and reclinable dental chair, made of a combination of aluminium and fiber reinforced plastic, along with a light weight portable compressor. It can be easily carried and taken for community purposes such as Dental camps targeting underprivileged, debilitated, elderly and poor patients who do not have the access to quality Dental healthcare at their doorstep. If we are able to take it to villages and other remote areas, we will revolutionize dentistry, as well as rural health altogether. The dental unit will also find its utility in Dental Colleges/Institutes and even a private dental set ups. (Patent filing no. 3554/CHE/2014)

3. TRIPARTITE –

The TRIPARTITE system is an automatic ‘three-in-one system’ unit consisting of

Suction system
Lighting source
Mechanical re tractor

Powered by a-

DC motor
Rechargeable battery.

The whole assembly is enclosed in a small casing, which is to be attached to the back side of the head rest of the dental chair. Tripartite addresses the three most common difficulties faced by a dentist namely, Isolation, Retraction and Illumination in a cost effective manner. (Patent filing no. 3555/CHE/2014)

4. VIRTUAL DENTIST –

We, as dentists ourselves, realized that there is no proper source of information about dentistry. The only way for people to get to know about this science is through assumption, word of mouth, and TV commercials whose main aim is to sell their products. Therefore, we decided to create a Smart Phone Application which aimed at closing the gap between dentistry and the common man by providing all necessary and basic information about the same, in a user friendly manner in Smart Phones & Tablets. It also serves as a portal to clear doubts and get questions answered by a team of certified dentists, without having to meet them in person. This App provides all information, concerning Oral Hygiene, Dental diseases, their symptoms and treatment and Oral Cancer, in a patient friendly manner, at the click of a button. In this regard, we aim to increase every individual’s awareness level and decrease his anxiety concerning dentists and dental procedures. We have the copyright of this App (Diary no - 11054/2013-CO/L, Registration no. – L-58750/2014)

“Your time is limited. Don’t lose it for living someone else’s life.”

- Steve Jobs

Today the world is changing so fast that it is hard to predict what will happen tomorrow. The normality of life is constantly shifting towards new technologies, concepts and opportunities in the global market. And maybe, the only way to stay competitive and successful at such a time is to do our own thing, to bring our ideas to life, while catching up with the pace of this new age, the age of the entrepreneurial world.

I believe that this is how the Munich start up community lives nowadays. Successful entrepreneurial stories are popping up like wild weeds, and being shared among the community. Listening to these anecdotes brings inspiration to the younger audience, and opens their eyes to another possible career path. This makes them rowdy and ready to act!

Munich is the home for many talented IT and engineering people, as well as being the headquarter of many world leading companies, supporting in youth entrepreneurship. Granted all that, the entrepreneurial spirit is strong in the city, and supported by many local organizations that actively develop the entrepreneurial success keystones in the community. One of these organizations is a student-initiative club called The Entrepreneurial Group (TEG).

When I first have entered the office of TEG, I thought it is just a few students trying to organize some events. Later on, I have realized how much TEG does for Munich’s entrepreneurial community. It provides tools to make big dreams become reality. TEG was founded in 1986, by a couple of students who decided to give their educational background another dimension; create a non-profit organization dedicated to entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial success keystone #1 that TEG helped me to gain: the size of the initiative group does not matter, but initiative itself matters.

Today, TEG is the platform for people with diverse professional and educational backgrounds that are willing to open their own company in the near future or have already engaged in such an activity. The team consists of students and young professionals from Germany and other countries. TEG is an international community, and welcomes everyone who is willing to extend their skills, knowledge and network. Furthermore, it offers an opportunity to network first hand in the entrepreneurial community, and outstanding people from different industries that somehow were also students dreaming about an entrepreneurial future. Some of them participated in TEG years ago and today these people are successful CEO s of their own middle size and large companies.

TEG positions itself as the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and thus tries to challenge and support Munich’s start up community with different events and ideas. Among its activities are workshops with industry leaders, conferences related to actual business topics, informal meetings with successful entrepreneurs, as well as special entrepreneurial education and promotional events. Few examples describing TEG entrepreneurial milestones that happened during the organization activities of 2013/2014 are presented below.

The spring of 2013 was a remarkable time because of the special TEG guest. The founder of TEG, Holger Wolff, who is the current CEO of MaibornWolff GmbH provided insights onto how TEG helped him achieve success in his company of today.

Holger Wolff joined TEG two weeks after it was created in 1986 at the age of 19. After his three years of experience with TEG, he went off to found his software company, with a friend who was also participating in organization activities. TEG helped him understand how business works. Organizing events is just like opening your own business; you need to understand the legal aspects, take care of the financials, use the marketing means to gain an audience, include reliable and professional people in the team, as well as build a professional network.

The next two entrepreneurial success keystones I have learned from him:

#2. Take your time: “Be patient and think strategically, success does not come at once”. His company employed 10 people during 10 years, but now they employ 10 people per month.

#3. Love your job: “Be joyful and enjoy your work”. He really loves what he does and it makes him happy, not necessarily the three Porsches that he owns. Although that might contribute slightly to his happiness factor.

In May 2014, we had a big presentation led by another remarkable TEG guest, Roland Berger, the founder of a world-known consultancy company. More than 500 students listened to his presentation. His life story was captivating.

The success of this 74 year old entrepreneur, consultant and philanthropist inspired the young audience to take risks and do what makes them happy. Roland Berger founded his company from scratch, went through a few failures, but succeeded in the end. For him, what mattered the most is how to make this world a better place. Success is not given by nature but gained in battleship and hard working days. His last words and #4 important entrepreneurial success keystone was: “Never give up and follow the spirit. This is how true entrepreneurs do it.”

TEG definitely follows the entrepreneurial spirit by connecting creative and talented people. Each year it pursues at least two educational events for those who just thinks about opening his/her own business, and for those who already has a solid idea.

The Start it Smarter concept was developed by the TEG team during one of its interactive team-building workshop weekends in the Alps. Start it Smarter has the goal to help students find the confidence, and gain some knowledge for engaging in the first steps of entrepreneurial activity, as well as extend their network. In 2013, Start it Smarter hosted the CEOs of three German companies: Braufässchen – a customized bier manufacturer, Zebramobil – the first car sharing company in Munich and Partyguerilla – an event management agency. All of them gave a speech on how they have started and what steps they undertook. The most important entrepreneurial success keystone #5 learned from Start it Smarter 2013 – don’t postpone your dreams, just sit and do it.

The second and the most important activity of TEG is Startup Weekend Munich. It was first organized in 2010 and each year, the Munich entrepreneurial community eagerly awaits for the next edition.

The slogan for this event is: “No talk. All action. Launch your startup in 52 hours.”

Startup Weekend Munich (SUWM) is a three day event where students and young professionals come together to generate, develop and implement ideas into solid businesses. It is a weekend geared by the entrepreneurial spirit, filled with creativity, networking and fun. In 2014, we had around 60 participants, more than 25 coaches from 10 different industries with 176 years of experience all together and 8 jury members representing IT, PR, Advertising, Venture Capital, Education, and Entrepreneurship.

The event started on a Friday, where everyone wanting to pitch their ideas had 60 seconds to convince the audience to vote for their ideas. The top 10 ideas were chosen and teams were formed according to skills needed. The weekend also provides teams with short informative workshops, given by experienced successful entrepreneurs, with the goal to further enrich their knowledge. The event is general is filled with high energy, where participants do not fear shaking their bodies to dance-like morning exercises.

Sunday is the day where the ideas turned into butterflies. The nominations of best pitch, most innovative idea and overall winner, were awarded to teams in the category of 3D printing, 3D software for shopping and mobile application, engaged in retail. There was also a special prize from Microsoft that was awarded to a retail mobile application. Just to get some feeling of Startup Weekend Munich environment, one can check this video.

Startup Weekend Munich, organized by TEG and supported by Global Entrepreneurial Community, changes the lives of people. At least two businesses each year continue to develop and are then soon launched in the market. At least five people decided to start their own business. And at least 95% of the participants decided that one day they will become a successful entrepreneur. For me the entrepreneurial success keystone #6 was: Be crazy, extend your limits, find the people that will do it with you.

TEG continues its entrepreneurial activities supporting and organizing regular meet ups for Startup Weekend Alumni. To meet and communicate with people who has the same mindset as you is very important. The further events that TEG will be providing to you Munich entrepreneurial community in the near future are: new Start it Smarter in November 2014, TEG Alumni meeting, Private Equity conference in February 2015, partner project with Consultancy Company and several workshops with successful CEOs. It is important however to mention our partners that help us make these events successful ones; they are: Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship, UP Global, Wayra Academy, LMU Center for Entrepreneurship, TUM Speaker Series club, Gruendeszene, Founder Institute as well as local small and medium size businesses.

The entrepreneurial community is strong in Munich, and continues to flourish every day. TEG in that same idea will continue to provide this community with tools so that everyone has the courage and the chance to do what they really want to do. The world is changing opening new business success keystones and one has to catch up with the pace of new age, the age of the entrepreneurial world.

snaplock : a lock screen ecstacy

Snaplock is a user interface app beautifully designed in order to relish the lock screen phone handling , the app is made by wandou labs who are into utility application sector , the application reminds the serenity of Siri infact a long usage will tell you no its different

The app has again a stunning interface with on screen pop out notification and alerts , the current version update 1.7.0 has some bug fixes versus the previous ones , Wandou has done a good job in making an app like sanplock infact making the lock screen phone usability also an eye candy segment , we are expecting similar bug fixes for the app since there times when the app crashes for 4.4.3 and above , for the lower version of android it works just fine

The settings view of the app faces a bug when trying to add new applications for notifications , sometimes the slider on the lock screen also faces issues ,Snaplock has given security a priority by including lock screen password protection interface , you can also include app shortcuts on your snaplock screen , wallpapers are really good which can also be customized as per your requirements it also includes

swipe to archive your unwanted notifications including clear button, you can customize the settings and turn off/on snaplock lock screen amongst an option of the stock android notifier , we would say it might be an application that a lot of android users were looking forward to , already reaching a download count of 50,000 users snaplock is slowly picking up the pace ,infact a few more improvements and fixes can be great

There can also be an embedded PowerAmp,Walkman,Whatsapp,Twitter or Linkedin application handlers , the current version only supports Messaging , Gmail and Facebook

We look forward towards this kind of application to improve the user experience in android phones , still giving a long sight to its competitors

Ways to keep-up Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive in a Growing Company

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT :-

Entrepreneurial spirit is a mind-set. It’s an attitude and approach to a thinking that actively seeks out change, rather than waiting to adapt to change. It’s a mind-set that embraces critical questioning, innovation, service and continuous improvement. It’s about seeing the big picture and thinking like an owner. It’s being agile, never resting on your laurels, shaking off the cloak of complacency and seeking out new opportunities. It’s about taking ownership and pride in your organization. To have an entrepreneurial spirit, you need people who think anything is possible and have the tenacity to accomplish it.

Here is how a growing company explains itself with the above mentioned point in mind so that you can understand it in a true sense

1. Small Teams :

There are many advantages to small groups of people. Communication is more efficient, information flows freely and personalities are easier to navigate. As we've grown, we've tried to maintain the advantages of small groups by creating teams with focused, specific goals that they help create. We've grown the organization by establishing new teams to tackle a business initiative, or by increasing the size of existing teams until they're ready to split into two.

2. Autonomy :

It’s all about building a team of people who are not afraid to be in the driver’s seat and are equally happy to ride in the passenger’s seat when others take the lead. It is truly built around collaboration; the concept that no idea is a bad idea. Small teams can't get much done unless they can fulfill their goals autonomously. To do that, teams need two characteristics:

They have to be cross-functional and independent. All our teams are staffed with this in mind, so they contain software engineers, Q.A. testers, user-experience developers and product owners.

The rest of the organization has to refrain from interfering with them. This piece is usually the hardest, particularly at a growing company with lots of smart people who think they know the best path forward. That's why a few of us make it our mission to nudge would-be meddlers in a different direction, letting the teams remain blissfully focused.

3. Hire the Right People:

It takes a special sort of person to thrive in a Start up environment, so hiring the right people is an important ingredient to our success. We look for people who are active in the open-source community (where flexibility and good communication skills are great benefits) and who are naturally curious and excited about technology (and therefore open to learning new ideas).Creativity, independence and humility are also key factors, as they make it easier to navigate our small teams.

4. Taking Risks:

Any company can, and should, set a goal to sustain a thriving entrepreneurial spirit. “But, of course, this gets more challenging as businesses grow—because as they do, there’s a tendency to move towards more complacency, increased bureaucracy, increased hierarchy and more complexity.” Companies start to lose the “underdog mentality” they started out with that fueled fighting, entrepreneurial spirit—and as they get bigger, businesses may feel they have more to lose than when they started out. This causes them to become more risk-adverse; more protective of what they've established. But it’s imperative that employers and employees keep their entrepreneurial spirit alive as the organization grows.

5. Remember where you came from:

As you grow and become more successful, never, ever forget what values and ideals got you to where you are. Embrace your roots and don't forget why you started your company—and why you instilled those values in the first place. Being consistent with the identity of your business throughout its growth is critically important.

liquid.radio – World's 1st Democratic Radio

Q.1 Introduce our readers briefly to yourself, your team and your venture. How should the world know you?

Hello from Berlin. Thank you so much for getting in touch. Let's start by pointing out that we are humbled and impressed that the word of the first ever democratic radio has spread to India and we love to share our experience with entrepreneurs and get connected.

David Hawkins is the very brightest of CTOs. Born in Chicago, Illinois in the United States, he's spent the past 14 years setting up IT Departments all over Europe having worked for LeMonde, Electronic Arts, and Pathe, With over 20 years’ worth of experience, his advice and experience both as a businessman and technology expert are invaluable, as is his gift of connecting with people on a personal level.

Coming from a journalism background Daniela Reinking was working for many years as a reporter and editor, when she quit her job and moved to Berlin on the quest for a new challenge. She had a satire show and this lead her to the field of media criticism: Journalists cannot be neutral; they are always influenced by governmental or corporate limitations and or even by choosing one topic to report about and neglecting another. Media is never free. Daniela Reinking questions what the industry defines as their norms. It was her vision of letting the listener’s choose the entire broadcasting, the democratic way that led to the birth of liquid.radio.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2036808210/the-worlds-1st-democratic-radio

Q.2 What has been your inspiration and motive behind starting such a radio? What kindled you to venture out into this field?

We felt there was something missing from the mainstream media. Traditional radio stations have lost touch with their listeners and online radio has become nothing but online mp3 players.

Streaming services like Spotify or Pandora on the other hand were meant to free the listener from the choice of journalists, but in long term it does not lead to free choice, it turns into the opposite. It pigeonholes you as a listener into a tight, predetermined user demographic and limits artist's exposure when they are locked into a personal playlist and don't get media coverage.

Before liquid.radio there was no longer any connection to the bands or the listeners. It was just music without any kind of context. Democratic Radio solves these two key problems.

Q.3 What type of hurdles came into your way initially and how did you deal with that?

It's hard getting investments nowadays when your business isn't primarily a technology business (and our radio station isn't considered technology). We are a social innovation. So that's a hurdle we struggled with. Our solution was that, if we couldn't attract investors right away, we would instead focus on attracting new users. Our reasoning was that if we got enough users then eventually the investors would have to come to us. Think of Wonga in the beginning or Facebook, a fast growing user base is definitely a proof of marketability.

Q.4 How diverse and vast is this venture currently and what more is going to come up?

We aren't at liberty to discuss our unreleased plans or our investors at this point, generally speaking right now we want to focus on perfecting our main business of music, news, reports, and advertising on a more international level. Once we've built up a core audience around those features we'll expand into related fields.

Q.5 How do you think your venture can bring about dynamic changes in the current trends? What makes it different?

Democratic radio takes an existing service from a once popular format (radio) and combines it with a need that hasn't been matched yet in media: Free choice. To us, "free choice" means giving our users the powers to interact with our company in such a way that it has a directly visible effect on the way we do business: The full program. For the companies we partner with it allows them to test their goods and services against a reasonable facsimile of real market conditions while paying a rate that's in line with what the service is worth to them. This gives us the ability to operate without charging our listeners for the service.

Q.6 How is the listener benefited from this?

We consider our users to be music and media voters, not listeners in the common sense. By voting news, reports or advertising they collect feedback points they can then exchange for vouchers, download and gift cards. More than that we offer them a direct connection to the musicians they are fans of and the products they are customers of. What they do at liquid.radio will have an effect on the future of both.

Q.7 Tell us about your advertisements and campaigns?

Part of the beauty of liquid.radio is the fact that, up until now, we've grown to over 20,000 users without any money spent on advertising. We publicize and update our site through traditional social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc...) But it's been the musicians and our fans that have come to us, in large numbers, and from all over the world. Recently we've been producing a video so that we could launch a crowdfunding campaign to test our business model on the market.

Q.8 How can your venture influence the Indian community? How should an Indian or an overseas listener look up to the 'democratic radio’?

We want to get your mind thinking. Don't accept anything as given or normal, you can make your own choice, if you don't limit your mind. We already have a large number of Indian users and bands. We have metal from Guwahati and electronic music from New Delhi and we want you to tell us what drives you and to network with international listeners. Part of our appeal is that anyone who's voted can make it onto the air Think of a social network of listener choice.

Q.9 How do you plan to deal with your regional listeners?

We want to connect Berlin users with the international media and music scene. In example, Germany has been pretty strong connected to the English music scene for a long time, listeners from Czech Republic, Denmark or Costa Rica might be driven by other songs and topics than the German ones, Indian users may even add a completely new point of view We don't think it as a cultural gap, we think it as a free mutual benefit. Bands might find support acts overseas, startups even might find business collaborations.

Q.10 What are your future plans, about extending this venture overseas and about your funding processes?
We are analyzing our options overseas and getting in touch with potential companies, as we experience Germany as very slow in adapting to the newest market trends. Especially when it comes to media, the German music licensing fees Gema and GVL are ineffective and old-fashioned, They restrict the growth of independent media on the one hand, the ones who should benefit from these services, don't get much either. Our funding process at this point clearly focuses on moving away and thus getting our user base to the next level.

Q.11 Is there anything which I might have missed out and which you would like our readers to know?

Democratic radio means: You vote, we broadcast! We want to know your opinion about our venture, we want to know the Indian Startup scene better, and we want to know which possibilities we might have to connect with companies and groups in India. We might take interns this autumn and we are also enlarging our business partner network. Get in touch with us at [email protected]. If you have an approach we didn't even think of: Wonderful, that's what choice is all about.

Q.12 Is there any message you would like to convey to the young entrepreneurs and start-ups from your experience?

Absolutely, first, the idea is just one percent of the business. You should not worry about someone stealing your idea; you should ask yourself, if you have the power to develop it, especially when it comes to IT. Don't try to do everything on your own, effectively team up with other skills. Second, you have to learn to love challenges and see that there is no way to fail: You either get a compliment or you get a piece of criticism. Both of which ultimately lead to progress.

You will have setbacks, the more the better, because effort is the path to mastery and your trial today, might lead to another solution tomorrow. A key fact: Get connected: Watch how others started, ask them for recommendations, ask them to introduce you to companies and persons that might help you to the next level, find out about lessons they have already learned. A strong network is a value that cannot be overstated. And most of all: Want it. If you can't think about anything else anymore and if you feel, this venture absolutely has to be done by you and this passion continues over years, you might be on the right way. Make your choice.
