ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പൊതു തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളുടെ ചരിത്രം പരിശോധിച്ചാൽ അത് ചെന്നെത്തി നിൽക്കുക 1951 ൽ നടന്ന ആദ്യ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിലേക്കാണ്. അമ്പത്തിയൊന്നു ഒക്ടോബർ 25 ന് ആരംഭിച്ച് 1952 ഫെബ്രുവരി 21 വരെ നീണ്ടു നിന്ന് ആ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായി ജവഹർലാൽ നെഹ്‌റു തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടത് ആ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിലാണ്. 489 ൽ 364 സീറ്റുകൾ നേടി മികച്ച ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് അന്ന് അധികാരത്തിലേറി.

രണ്ടാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധം അവസാനിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം, 1945 അവസാനത്തിലാണ് ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടന എന്ന ആശയം ഉയർന്നുവരുന്നത്. അതേ വർഷം ഒക്ടോബർ 24 ന് യുണൈറ്റഡ് നേഷൻസ് അഥവാ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടന നിലവിൽ വന്നു. സുരക്ഷാ കൗൺസിലിലെ അഞ്ച് സ്ഥിരാംഗങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ, 193 രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനയിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ്.

ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയുടെ നിയമസാധുത, കൺവീനിംഗ് പവർ, മാനദണ്ഡപരമായ സ്വാധീനം എന്നിവയുള്ള മറ്റൊരു ആഗോള സംഘടനയുമില്ല. ലോക രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ ഇത്രകണ്ട് പ്രതീക്ഷയർപ്പിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു ആഗോള സംഘടനയും ഉണ്ടാകില്ല എന്നും പറയാം. ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനയുടെ 78 ആം വാർഷിക ദിനമാണ് ഇന്ന്.
