If you need a job in the railways, you wonât get it, but a retired uncle surely will. Right now, there are 33,000 vacancies for locomotive pilots in our railways. That means one-fourth of the required train drivers simply arenât there. Now look at the railway authoritiesâ arrangementâthose who are still working are being forced to do 15-hour overtime shifts, and retired drivers are being called back on contract. Because of this, the drivers are getting exhausted from overwork or old age, which is increasing the risk of accidentsâand weâre already seeing the results. The Railway Boardâs attitude is such that even those who cleared exams back in 2018 are still waiting for their postings. Even though vacancies were announced in 2024, exams have been going on for the last 20 months without end. Till today, no selection has been finalized, and no postings have been given. The situation is so bad that nearly 300,000 posts in the railways are lying vacant.
