Dhuin (Maithali, India)| Dir: Achal Mishra ★★★★1/2

Achal Mishra’s second feature film "Dhuin," is a compact 50-minute masterpiece that poignantly depicts the struggles of a small-town actor named Pankaj who must find a balance between his passion and duties. The film showcases the challenges faced by Pankaj, who is faced with financial limitations in a society where practicality often overrides aspirations.

Pankaj's character is both relatable and inspiring as he strives to overcome life's obstacles while holding onto his dreams. One particularly memorable scene involves Pankaj climbing a tree as a plane flies overhead, perfectly capturing the conflict between his roots and the need for stability and his desire for freedom and the pursuit of his dream. He even imitates a famous Bollywood actor, Shahrukh Khan, for a photograph.

The film also sheds light on the impact of the recent pandemic and its aftermath on ordinary people, making it relevant and current. The cinematography and score contribute to the film's overall mood, creating an immersive and emotional experience for the audience. The climax of the film leaves the viewer on the edge of their seat as Pankaj must make a life-altering decision. The lead actor's performance is outstanding, adding depth to the character's journey.

In conclusion, this film is a must-watch for anyone who has faced the dilemma of choosing between their passions and responsibilities. It conveys a powerful message about the importance of pursuing one's dreams, despite any obstacles. Overall, "Dhuin" is a well-made and touching film that is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

What can one write about a movie that evokes no emotions? ★ ½

The main character, Pratiskha, who is newly married, travels to London to meet her husband, Aritro, only to discover that he is missing. In search of answers, she decides to stay and uncover the reason for his disappearance.

Unfortunately, the film fails to engage the audience, even with the presence of Kaushik Ganguli. Tasnia Farhin is a talented actor in Bengali cinema, but Atanu Ghosh's screenplay fails to provide her with a meaningful opportunity to showcase her abilities. The characters are bland and the film is uninspiring as a result.

There are scenes that could have been more effective if the camera had lingered longer. The film takes a turn into a thriller at the interval, but the transition is not successful. Atanu Ghosh's previous film, "Bini Sutoy," was well-made, but this film falls short in both the screenplay and its ex*****on.

I am highly disappointed with the film. I will give one and a half-star for Kaushik Ganguli.
