This Supreme Court session, presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, addressed the systemic issue of safety for doctors in India, triggered by the horrific r**e and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal, Maninder Singh, AM Singhvi, and Vijay Hansaria were present, alongside Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The court emphasized the dire need for improved safety conditions in hospitals, particularly for women doctors, highlighting the absence of safe work environments and the long hours young doctors are subjected to without adequate facilities. The bench expressed deep concern over the immediate transfer of the principal involved in the case to another college, despite ongoing scrutiny.
A National Task Force was established, comprising leading doctors and government officials, to devise a national protocol ensuring the safety of medical professionals. The court also condemned the circulation of the victim’s photos and videos, noting this as a grave violation of dignity.
