The newly restored version of Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece “Aranyer Din Ratri” (Days and Nights in the Forest, 1970) to have its world premiere today 7:45 pm at the Salle Bunuel!

The film is restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the The Criterion Collection. Funding provided by the Golden Globe Foundation. Special thanks to Wes Anderson and Sandip Ray. 4K restoration completed using the original camera and sound negative preserved by the producer Purnima Dutta.

Chander Pahar was filmed for 45 days in South Africa. Before filming, Director Kamaleshwar Mukherjee threw a party. Upon questioning, he said, "Before the shooting of the film which contains a large number of risks, team Chander Pahar wanted a party with the presence of all the crew and artists. Who knows if anyone doesn't come back forever! Everyone's life is at stake."

Iconic scenes from films often spark a desire in viewers to visit those locations. ‘অরণ্যের দিনরাত্রি’র শুটিং করে যে আনন্দ পেয়েছি, তার আর কখনও পাইনি। অসামান্য লোকেশন। এপ্রিলের দাবদাহে, পালামৌয়ের অরণ্যে গাছেদের কঙ্কালসার দেহ, ঝকঝকে আকাশের তলায় ঝরা পাতার স্তুপ ছড়িয়ে রয়েছে— সব মিলিয়ে যেন এক জাদুবাস্তব। ওই অরণ্যের আউটডোরের স্মৃতি আমার মনে স্থায়ীভাবে রয়ে গিয়েছে। একটা মাস আমরা কাটিয়েছিলাম জঙ্গলের মধ্যে। এপ্রিল মাসে সেখানে দিনের তাপমাত্রা উঠে যায় ৪৮ ডিগ্রিতে। আমরা খুব ভোরে উঠে তিনঘণ্টা কাজ করতাম, আবার সন্ধ্যা হওয়ার আগে তিনঘণ্টা। বাকি সময়টা নিছক আড্ডা।পূর্ণিমা এগিয়ে আসার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে গোটা অরণ্যটা মায়াবী হয়ে উঠত। দূর থেকে ভেসে আসত মাদলের বোল, হাতির ডাক। একবার মনে আছে, খেয়ালের বশে সাঁওতালদের সঙ্গে গিয়ে প্রায় শেষরাত পর্যন্ত নেচেছিলাম। ~ শর্মিলা ঠাকুর ~ ডাকবাংলা থেকে নেওয়া

অপুর সংসার-এ অপর্ণার মৃত্যুর পর সব কিছু ছেড়েছুড়ে অপু চলে গিয়েছিল কোলিয়ারিতে, চাকরি করছিল সেখানে। সৌমিত্র বলছেন ~ সে দৃশ্যের শুটিং হয়েছিল মধ্যপ্রদেশের চিরিমিরি-তে। ‘বনজঙ্গল পাহাড়-ঘেরা কয়লাখনির অমন নিসর্গ শোভা কমই দেখেছি। শীতের মুখে আমরা সেখানে শুটিং করতে গেলাম। ঝরনার জল খাওয়ার একটা শট ছিল, সেই সময়টা আমি বোধহয় একটু বেশিই হইহই করছিলাম, ইউনিটের অন্যদের সঙ্গে ভাব জমে গেলে যা হয় আর কী! মানিকদা খুব ধমক দিয়ে আমাকে ডাকলেন, তার পর সেই জলদ্‌গম্ভীর গলা: ‘মন দিয়ে করো কাজটা।’ পরে বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম, আমাকে তৈরি করার জন্যই ও ভাবে বকেছিলেন।’ – সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়
