It’s the 250th birthday of Jane Austen today. While the main events of Austen250 are taking place throughout this year in places like Bath, Chawton, and Wi******er, Reading, where we currently live, also hosted a few small events celebrating the famous novelist. The Inner Gateway of the 900-year-old Reading Abbey was the site of the Reading Abbey Girls' School, which Jane, along with her sister Cassandra, attended from 1785 for about a year. They ultimately had to leave as the Austen family couldn’t afford the fees. This year, during the Heritage Open Days, I visited the first floor of the Gateway, which was once the girls’ school classroom.

After spending the first day of our Dorset trip around Lulworth Cove, we decided to visit Corfe Castle next. Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series was one of our childhood favourites, and visiting the real-life Kirrin Castle has been a long-time dream. (BTW, heard the Kirrin Bay was inspired by Lulworth Cove) Corfe Castle didn’t disappoint us a bit. From the castle to the cute village centre, to the train station and the viaduct - we just loved everything there. Yes, it’s a bit crowded with tourists, but it's a beautiful place nonetheless. We also wanted to go for a circular walk around the castle. But as we were using public transport, and the last bus back to West Lulworth was scheduled early, we had to cancel the idea despite the long summer day.

We were visiting the Jurassic Coast in Dorset after eight years. Last time it was just a weekend trip, and we had only enough time to explore Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. This time, the plan was to do a circular walk to White Nothe and back, and also visit Corfe Castle and some nearby places, apart from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Like last time, we decided to make the hostel at West Lulworth our base. After checking in there, we spent the rest of the first day walking over the Bindon Hill to Lulworth Cove and spending some time around the Stair Hole.

Imagine someone buying 15 farms with a total of over 4000 acres of land, mainly to save the area from developers trying to build modern houses! A writer and illustrator, she went on to become a farmer and later played an instrumental role in the conservation of Herdwick sheep. She bequeathed all her property to the National Trust. You can’t imagine the Lake District without Beatrix, the OG Potter. We went on a pilgrimage to Near Sawrey and Hill Top, the farm she bought and made her home in 1905.

Windermere is both the name of the largest lake in England and a town situated nearby. Although they share the name, they don’t touch each other. Between them, on the shore, is Bowness-on-Windermere.

The Lake District, especially during the summer, is an expensive destination. Affordable places get booked out fast. After a couple of days of searching, we ended up booking a homestay somewhere between the train station and the ferry.

Although we reached the accommodation deep into the afternoon, the daylight stretching till ten prompted us to go for a small hike atop Brant Fell, which offered breathtaking views of the lake. The walk was lovely, and the view stunning. With only the bleating sheep around us, we would have stayed longer if not for the rain, which came pouring down.

During our walk around Brant Fell, we came across stretches that reminded us of our very own Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Kurseong. Rather, what these places might have looked like a hundred years ago. Without the crowd, the litter, and the mindless constructions.

We’ve been planning this for a long, long time now. Finally, Lake District, here we come. The views are awesome already. Rolling green fields, grazing sheep, dry stone walls and intermittent villages. Add to that the near-empty train coach. Lovely 😍

A satisfying day of hiking in the Cotswolds through the rolling hills, past the grazing sheep. From Moreton-in-Marsh to Bourton-on-the-Hill, Longborough and again back to Moreton-in-Marsh.
