The Taste of Raiganj – A Food Lover’s Nostalgia

No trip to my childhood town could be complete without reliving the tastes that shaped my growing-up years. Food has always been the heart of my memories, and in Raiganj, every bite felt like homecoming.
I started with Netai Ghosher legendary puri–torkari and mishti — the same breakfast that had fueled my school mornings years ago. Then came Bolakar’s crispy, golden singara, as delicious as I remembered. Standing in the same queues, I felt like time hadn’t moved at all. And of course, the phuchka stall near my school. One bite of that spicy, tangy water-filled delight, and I was instantly that carefree schoolboy again, standing with friends after class.
But nothing touched me more than the meals at home, cooked by Ma. Simple yet soulful — steaming bhat with desi murgir jhol, desi khasir jhol (mutton curry), and ilish mach bhat. These were the flavors of my childhood, the kind I had missed for years in Kolkata. Each plate was pure emotion — homely, rustic, and irreplaceable.
Sometimes, food is not just food — it’s the flavor of time, the taste of belonging. In Raiganj, I didn’t just eat — I relived my childhood through every plate, from the street stalls to my Ma’s kitchen.

If you were in your hometown, what would you eat first?

My Raiganj Days – Walking Through Memories, April 2019 🌿

After spending two days in my gramer bari, I arrived at Raiganj — the town where I grew up till Class 12. Just 10 meters away from my mamabari stood our old home, beside the big pond that once held the rhythm of my childhood.

Every corner of Raiganj whispered memories. The playground where endless cricket matches were fought, the lanes where I cycled to tuition, the familiar streets that once shaped my school days. Standing there again after years, I felt time folding in on itself — the boy I once was standing beside the man I had become.

For 2–3 days, I strolled around like a local child again, not a visitor. Every face, every shop, every path carried echoes of the past. It was more than nostalgia — it was a warm embrace from my roots.

✨ April 2019 wasn’t just about a new job, it was about rediscovering the pieces of myself I thought I had left behind.

As if destiny had planned it, just when I reached my gramer bari, a village fair lit up the fields nearby. Bamboo poles wrapped in fairy lights, folk songs playing through the speakers, children running with glowing toys — the air was filled with celebration. ✨

For two days, I became a child again. I roamed through the fair eating momos, ghugni, jalebi, fuchka, ice cream, and endless cups of hot tea. Each corner had something to offer — colorful stalls, warm faces, and the simple joy of community life.

I clicked dozens of photos — stalls glowing under lights, bangles shining in rows, smiling kids, and people gathering in groups. Every frame felt alive, carrying the spirit of the mela. Those moments weren’t just about a fair — they were about stepping back in time.

I felt the same joy I did during childhood Durga Puja visits here, the same sense of belonging. Sometimes happiness hides in the simplest places — a village fair, a cup of tea, a familiar laugh. 🌸 Village mela or city fair — which do you love more?

Plates of Joy

Hi! I am Rounak from Kolkata, a banker by profession. I was born and brought up in Raiganj. I had immense love and passion for food since I was a child.

I still remember the days, when my mom used to give me 'Rikshabhara' for going to school and tution and I used to save that money to savour some fuchka, singara or lassi or some other street snacks while walking the whole path.

After coming to Kolkata in 2012, I realized that the number of eateries here is infinite. From Dec, 2016 I started eating at different places. I have eaten at more than 350 restaurants till date.

I used to watch a lot of food videos on YouTube then, I am a BIG Mark Wiens @migrationology fan! The thought of documenting the food culture of Kolkata through pictures, stories and videos came across my mind a number of times. But, I was too shy to bring my camera to the restaurants.
