An Indian startup built a ship that sails itself, and it just pulled off something no one had done globally.
It’s called Matangi, built by Pune-based Sagar Defence Engineering. No captain. No crew. An indigenous AI system called Genesis uses radar and cameras to understand its surroundings, avoid collisions, and navigate on its own, even at night.
It travelled 1,500 km from Mumbai to Tuticorin fully autonomously. Indian Navy officials said a 1,500 km autonomous run hadn’t been achieved anywhere in the world before that.
The bigger play: this isn’t limited to one ship. Their Genesis system can be fitted onto existing boats to convert them into autonomous vessels, which is far cheaper than building new ones.
The company is also building autonomous underwater robots, drones, and defence systems.
The future of shipping might not need anyone behind the wheel. 🇮🇳
