Meet a healthcare professional whose work might not always make headlines but is quietly transforming emergency medicine in Kerala and beyond. As the Chief Operating Officer and Group Head (Sr Consultant - EM & TC) at Caritas Hospital & Institute of Health Sciences, Dr. Ajith Venugopalan blends cutting-edge innovation with heartfelt care, changing lives one emergency at a time!
Born in Kochi, Kerala, his leadership journey began early as Senior School Captain at Bhavans Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara where his natural drive and compassion first shone through. These qualities guided him through his medical education—earning an MBBS from Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College and topping his class with an MD in Emergency Medicine from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. This remarkable achievement set the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to impactful healthcare.
But Ajith’s journey didn’t stop at clinical expertise. Recognizing that healthcare is much more than patient care alone, he pursued advanced education including an MBA in Hospital Administration & Healthcare Management, a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law & Ethics, and a Diploma in Healthcare Quality Management. Fellowships from the Academic College of Emergency Experts and Intensive Care Medicine further sharpened his blend of strategic insight and clinical skill—preparing him to lead in complex, evolving healthcare environments.
With this strong foundation, Ajith took on one of his most ambitious projects: spearheading the creation of a 48-bed emergency department at MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery, in 2016. This state-of-the-art, 20,000 sq. ft. facility quickly became more than just a hospital wing—it grew into a premier training center for emergency physicians and a vital community lifeline.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Ajith’s steady leadership was tested like never before. As the Nodal Officer for Hospital’s Institutional Rapid Response and COVID Response Teams at MOSC Medical College, he navigated the hospital through unprecedented challenges with calm determination—ensuring both patient safety and staff resilience during the crisis.
Ajith’s vision extends far beyond hospital walls. In 2019, as Lead Trainer of "Heart Beats," a project under the leadership of IMA Cochin, he orchestrated a nationwide CPR training event that empowered over 28,000 students in a single day—setting Guinness World Records & Best of India record. This remarkable effort wasn’t just about breaking records; it was about giving ordinary people the power to save lives.
Innovation is a constant theme in his work. Ajith pioneered India’s first Tele-Medic AI Emergency Department on Wheels—C-RATS AI at Caritas Hospital—bringing advanced emergency care to underserved and remote areas where access was once a challenge. He has also played important roles at Caritas in obtaining Champion of NABH Digital Health, AHPI Global Excellence award in Emergency service & Digital Health & as well as Operation management.
His widely followed social media page, “EM Diaries,” complements this work by breaking down complex medical topics into simple, engaging videos and posts. Thousands follow it eagerly, finding clear guidance, myth-busting, and vital first aid information that empowers communities to act confidently in emergencies.
His dedication to societal well-being is further reflected in his role in the “Cup of Life” 2022 another Guinness World Record initiative also under the leadership of IMA Cochin, which distributed the most sanitary products in 24 hours. This effort underscores his belief that healthcare must address the whole person—and community—not just symptoms or diagnoses.
On the global stage, Ajith served as Event Doctor for the FIFA World Cup & related events Qatar 2022, ensuring medical readiness, mass casualty management, disaster preparedness & leadership at one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
He is also an Observer and Individual Expert for the WHO Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance Network (REMPAN), having undergone specialized training in Japan in Radiation Emergency Medicine. These roles highlight his commitment to global health and disaster preparedness, extending his impact far beyond Kerala.
His academic contributions are equally impressive. From 2018 to 2022, he was Chief Editor of the TEAMS Newsletter, the official voice of the key emergency medicine association. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on various topics like sepsis protocols, snakebite management, trauma stabilization, and ECG interpretation—shaping both policy and frontline practice. His contributions appear even as Editorial board member in respected journals such as the Eurasian Journal of Emergency Medicine and the International Journal of Medical and Health Research, and he serves as a peer reviewer for several prestigious publications, advancing evidence-based emergency care. He has also led training, academic programs & simulation events in India and abroad.
Reflecting on his work, Ajith shares, “In emergency medicine, every second counts. What drives me is not just the science, but the chance to give someone hope in their darkest hour. If I can help even one family smile again after a crisis, that makes every challenge worthwhile.”
His leadership and expertise have earned him recognition including the Best Paper Presentation Award in the International symposium on Hospital Medicine along with Mayo Clinic (2015), EMA Academic Leadership Award (2020), and Excellence Doctor Award (2024) for outstanding contributions to emergency and pre-hospital care. Starting in 2025, he will continue shaping healthcare policy as General Secretary of the Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI), Kerala Chapter.
Dr. Ajith Venugopalan’s work makes a lasting impact every day. By improving emergency care, training thousands, and bringing medical services to remote areas, optimising patient experience & operations management he combines expertise with compassion. His dedication inspires hope and builds a healthier, stronger future for Kerala and beyond!
