Left Parties Extend Full Support to Nationwide General Strike; Mega Protest Held in Kulgam

Tanveer Wani

Kulgam, July 9, 2025 — The five undersigned Left parties have extended their full support to the countrywide general strike called by the Joint Platform of Trade Unions, which includes ten Central Trade Unions (CTUs), the Jammu and Kashmir Students Federation, Apple Federation, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Youth Federation (JKDYF), Kissan Tehreek, and several independent all-India sectoral federations and associations.

The general strike has been called to oppose the implementation of the new Labour Codes, which are seen as a direct attack on the democratic rights of workers. These codes are part of a larger corporate-driven agenda that aims to dismantle long-established labor protections and restrict workers’ rights to organize, protest, and engage in collective bargaining.

As part of the nationwide call, a massive protest demonstration was held today in Kulgam near the PHE Division office. The protest witnessed enthusiastic participation from various sections of society, including workers, farmers, students, and youth.

Prominent among these initiatives are the referral of vacant posts to the JKPSC and the ongoing recruitment process through JKSSRB, which have been welcomed as significant steps towards addressing staff shortages and enhancing the quality of education in government schools.

The Association also appreciated the re-engagement of Cluster Resource Coordinators (CRCs) and Subject Specific Teachers (SSTs), noting that this move has not only helped bridge critical teaching-learning gaps but has also created valuable employment opportunities for thousands of qualified and deserving youth in the region.
