Actress Hayden Panettiere, who died on August 16 at the age of 36, had spoken candidly earlier this year about the gap between public images and the reality of her personal life.

In a May 2026 episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, released as she promoted her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere reflected on the intense scrutiny she faced throughout her career and the struggles that remained hidden from public view.

“Don’t believe what you see in a picture. There’s so much more going on, so much more,” she said while discussing the experiences she had written about in her memoir.

Panettiere spoke about growing up in the public eye, addiction, postpartum depression, anxiety, an abusive relationship and the death of her younger brother, Jansen, in 2023. She also described the difficulty of separating her private identity from the characters and headlines audiences associated with her.

Her death was confirmed on August 17. She was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said there were no signs of trauma or foul play, while the cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

Panettiere was best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville. Her memoir, released in 2026, offered a detailed account of her struggles with fame, addiction, motherhood, relationships and grief.
