๐ซ The Art of Letting Go: A Story, A Lesson, and A Path to Freedom ๐ซ
One day, the great Sufi mystic Abraham Adam, once the mighty Emperor of Bokhara, found himself staying with another ascetic.
This ascetic, despite having renounced the world, was constantly complaining about his poverty.
๐น Abraham Adam turned to him and said,
โThe way you curse your poverty, it seems you have bought it cheaply.โ
The ascetic scoffed, โHow foolish! Who buys poverty?โ
With a serene smile, Abraham replied,
โI paid my entire kingdom for it. And every single day, its value only grows for me.โ
๐ What Does This Story Teach Us?
The ascetic had left behind material wealth, but wealth had not left him. He had renounced riches, yet he was still enslaved by them.
Abraham Adam, on the other hand, had discovered the true treasure of spiritual povertyโnot the lack of possessions, but the freedom from being possessed by them.
๐ฐ Many believe that accumulating more will make them secure, happy, or powerful. But watch the man clinging to his goldโhe is not free. He is restless, fearful, and constantly anxious about losing what he owns.
๐ธ Possessiveness is the real diseaseโnot what you own, but how you own it.
๐ก What Does This Mean for You?
The fear of losing is the real fear behind death. Not just death of the body, but the death of identity, wealth, status, and attachments.
If you want true freedom, learn to let go. Not by escaping the world, but by being unattached within it.
Ask yourself:
โจ Does your wealth own you, or do you own your wealth?
โจ If your house burns down today, will you remain the same?
โจ If someone scratches your car, will it scratch your peace?
๐ค๏ธ How to Execute This in Daily Life?
๐น Observe Your Attachments
What are you most afraid to lose? Recognizing them is the first step to freedom.
๐น Practice Giving Without Expectation
Give away something meaningfulโnot something useless. Feel the resistance. Let go.
๐น Live in Gratitude, Not Ownership
Nothing is truly yours. Not your house, not your wealth, not even your body. Everything is borrowed from existence.
๐น Be in the World, But Not of It
Own possessions but remain detached. Have wealth, but donโt let it define you. Let things come and go like waves on the shore.
๐น Face Your Fear of Losing
Imagine losing everything. Meditate on it. What remains? You remain. That is the only reality.
๐ The Ultimate Freedom
Relinquishing possessions is not about renouncing life, but about renouncing attachment. It is about moving freely, untouched yet deeply engaged.
Only then can you live fully.
Only then can you die without regret.
So I ask you today:
๐ What are you still holding on to? And is it worth your peace?
