India Bans Imports of US Poultry Due to Bird Flu

INDIA - India plans to challenge a World Trade Organisation order that told New Delhi to remove curbs on poultry imports from the US, saying it is important to protect the industry that supports livelihood of millions of people in the country.

According to The Economic Times, India had banned poultry imports on account of avian influenza, which WTO called 'unscientific'." We are filing an appeal very soon to the appellate body. We may get improvement in the panel decision itself, which will help us in future," a commerce department official told ET.
"We are, no doubt, committed to protect the industry in a WTO compliant way," the official said, adding that the poultry sector is growing in many states and has huge employment potential.
Fearing loss of business, local poultry players have been pressing the government to take steps to ensure that the US does not dump chicken legs, an item that they say Americans usually discard, in the Indian market.
Currently, fresh chicken in retail was selling for 180 rupees (INR) a kg and chicken legs for INR240 a kg. On the other hand, chicken drumsticks from US come in at around INR50 to 60 a kg.
G.B. Sundararajan, managing director of Suguna Poultry Farms, said the industry was working to provide international quality product at affordable rates.
On the likely threat from the US, he said, "We are adopting wait-and-watch policy. The outcome to the issue can take six months to two years."
India is the fourth largest producer of chicken in the world after the US, China and Brazil, with annual production of 3.5 to 4.0 million tonnes. Per-capita consumption of chicken in India has been on the rise, with eating habits changing predominantly in the metro cities, driving demand for fresh meat and meat products.
Organised players such as Godrej Tyson, Suguna Foods, Venkateshwara Hatcheries and Alchemist have been expanding their retail base and increasing capacities. Currently, foreign suppliers have no direct access to the Indian poultry market.
Global poultry majors like Pilgrim's of the US, Brazil's Perdigao and Charoen Pokphand Foods from Thailand are keen to enter the country, industry executives said.
US-based Tyson Foods entered the Indian market in 2006 through a joint venture with Godrej. In the 1980s, US poultry breeding company Cobb had a joint venture with Venkateshwara Hatcheries.
The Economic Times adds that the Aviagen Group, the world's premier poultry breeder, had set up an integrated back-end processing plant in Coimbatore.

Pregnancy Checks A Must For Profitable Herds

Cattle pregnancy testing, if done accurately, can save money and save on wasted calves, a veterinary body is saying.

Australian farmers are being told that, whether pregnant or not, extra feed and care going to undetected open cows and lost calves when bulled cows are slaughtered is financially draining.

A pregnancy costs upwards of A$400, according to Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) cattle experts.

To address rising demand for tests, Australian Cattle Veterinarians (ACV), a cattle group within the AVA, has developed an audited testing scheme for Australia.

The National Cattle Pregnancy Diagnosis Scheme is designed to reassure farmers and produced accountability for work undertaken.

“Under our scheme, only accredited vets are able to apply tags, so when you buy or sell a cow or heifer you know it’s been tested by a National Cattle Pregnancy Diagnosis vet,” said ACV president, Dr Enoch Bergman.

He sees pregnancy testing as something farmers can’t afford not to do.

“The return on investment for accurate pregnancy diagnosis in cattle is tenfold.

“Accuracy is critical to get a good return on your investment. For example, if you incorrectly diagnose a cow and put it back in the field believing it’s pregnant when it’s not, that’s an extra year’s worth of feed.”

Beware of Softened Water and Milk Replacer
Water quality checks should be conducted annually - at a minimum.

Ensuring milk-replacer reaches the calf's digestive system can be complicated by mixing solutions with "soft" water, according to a Land O'Lakes nutrition expert .

Water is softened by sodium, with too much sodium causing toxicity, Dr Tom Earlywine is telling farmers.
Beware of Mixing Milk Replacer

The ingredients in the milk replacer selected to feed preweaned calves receive a lot of water, writes Dr Earlywine for the North Dakota State University newsletter Dairy Connection.

Young calves do not tolerate poor water quality well. Water quality can affect mixed milk-replacer quality, mixed electrolyte solution quality, calf water consumption and starter intake, calf health, rumen development, and the effectiveness of cleaners and disinfectants.

One common error in water management is using sodium chloride-softened water to reconstitute milk replacer.

Do not do it! In typical softeners, sodium replaces the hardness minerals to soften the water, and this can lead to sodium toxicity for calves, writes Mr Schroeder.

While some testing guidelines indicate that 2,000 parts per million (ppm) of sodium in water is safe for cattle, those numbers do not apply to young calves.

Calves can tolerate only 50 ppm of sodium. Soft water often exceeds that threshold. Thus, using soft water to reconstitute milk replacer would compound the problem because of the sodium already in milk replacer.

Calves also are sensitive to excessive levels of iron, manganese, magnesium, sulfur and microbial contamination.

The best advice: Get a calf-suitability test of the water delivered to preweaned calves, including the water source used to mix milk replacer.

When submitting water samples for analysis, ask for an assessment of:

Total soluble salts or total dissolved solids, which measures the salinity or amount of soluble salts in water, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride and sulfate salts
Hardness – calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese all affect water hardness
All of the individual minerals listed in total dissolved solids and hardness tests
pH
Nitrates
Copper
Phosphorus
Microbial contaminants such as coliforms, E. coli and salmonella

Significance Of Milk in Ayurveda & Ways To Consume It.

In Ayurveda, milk is believed to be sweet both in taste as well as after-taste, unctuous, cooling, heavy, natural enhancer of Ojas (Immunity / Vital energy reserve of the body and mind), nourishing for the seven Dhatus ( The seven body tissues i.e. Juice, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone-marrow and semen) and natural aphrodisiac.

Ayurveda guidance for Consuming Milk

Ayurveda essentially counsels the intake of milk for gaining as well as maintaining well being, yet there is substantial guidance which needs to be followed:
- Milk should not be mixed or eaten with sour, bitter, salty, astringent, or pungent tastes. This is because when mixed into or consumed with these tastes, it becomes toxic and rather indigestible. On the other hand, taking it with sweet taste makes it nourishing and easy to be digested. Taking sweetened milk before bedtime, mainly buffalo’s milk, tends to help you to have good night’s sleep.
- You must avoid taking cold and refrigerated milk, and it is better if the it is consumed after boiled or warming the same. Heating changes its molecular structure so it is much easier for human consumption and it reduces kapha, making it lighter to digest.
- Quantity of milk to be consumed depends on the age and the digestive capacity of the individual. One to two cups of warm milk per day should be ideal. Also, in case you are feasting on cow’s milk, you would generally not need to add extra sweetener, as it is naturally sweet.
- Also, Ayurveda cautions to evade consuming fish and sea food along with milk.

Enhancing Digestion Of Milk

- In case, you find it difficult to digest milk, and also for the individuals who are overweight, or with high cholesterol levels and suffering from heart disease, buttermilk is better option than taking the milk.
- So as to make the milk more easily digestible, you may also try adding a pinch either of ground turmeric, ginger or cinnamon. These herbs help to rescue the unctuous effect of the same and make it lighter for digestion.
- In case, you still find it a little too heavy for your system to be able to digest and yet you want to imbibe the natural goodness of the milk, you may try out this option.

You may gradually start with one-fourth, or even one-eighth cup of milk mixed in water and boiled together. The herbs that are mentioned may be included to enhancing digestion and easy assimilation of the milk. Then you may steadily increase the amount to about a cup of milk a period of time.

Age Wise Recommendation for taking Milk

- Ayurveda has mentioned that milk is the only amiable diet to child, when mother or wet nurse are unable to feed the baby, goat or cow milk should be given in appropriate amount.(the quantity by which the baby feels contented.)
- As the age progresses, milk becomes a necessity especially around the age of 50 years and above as this is the age when our bones start showing signs of degeneration and more prone to fractures and arthritis due to weakness of bone tissue.
- Milk is also considered essential for restoring the health of females. Specifically during the period of pregnancy and lactation, Ayurveda advises that women should consume adequate quantities of the same.
- Milk consumption is also recommended for the elderly and for the women during their menopausal age. These are the stages of age when the bones are weak, stamina is low and there is more susceptibility towards osteoporosis and arthritis.

Effect of Milk on Body Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha

As per Ayurveda text, milk tends to increase the Kapha dosha or the Phlegm body humor. And also, it is believed that it brings about a decrease in the aggravated Vata and Pitta doshas (Air and Fire body humors).

Benefit of Cow’s Milk in various Ailments

Cow’s milk has also been recommended in Ayurveda therapy in a number of ailments or health depriving conditions like general weakness, vertigo, fatigue, debility, cough, bronchitis, asthma, increased thirst and hunger, chronic fever, decreased urination etc.

क्षीरसात्म्यतयाक्षीरमाजंगव्यमथापिवा।

दद्यादास्तन्यपर्याप्तेर्बालेभ्योवीक्ष्यमात्रया।(भा. प्र. पू. ख. ४/ ३५)

This Ayurveda shloka conveys that in case of non- availability of breast milk of dhaatri(wet nurse) or mother, goat’s or cow’s milk can be given to the child as an alternative, because it is considered to be saatmya(compatible or congenial) food for children.
