“He had no Blueprint. He WAS the Blueprint.” - BHANGRA TAPE DECK

The title GOAT is often thrown about to artists, musicians and producers, day in, day out, with many people not fully understanding the gravity of such an accolade.

Charanjit Ahuja was one such Music Director and Musician that wholeheartedly embodied that title without ever affirming to be it. With a back catalogue that any Music Director would dream of, working with artists such as Kuldip Manak, Surinder Shinda and Amar Singh Chamkila, to name a few, to create undeniably evergreen albums, the Panjabi Music Industry owes an immense amount of gratitude to what Ahuja Ji did for the Panjabi culture. Over multiple decades, brick by brick, he laid the foundations for what Panjabi Music now stands on.

His compositions, his songs have provided infinite inspiration to artists that have followed in his footsteps. Be it sampled or similar compositions, Charanjit Ahuja’s influence echoes throughout the Panjab scene, but equally the UK scene. Producers such as , and have been heavily influenced by the Pioneer’s sound. There are, without doubt, countless other artists that equally been influenced by Ahuja Ji’s work.

And the mad thing about his back catalogue? He created it from scratch. There was no Blueprint for him to draw from. He WAS the Blueprint!

Words alone will never be able to accurately articulate the GENIUS of this man, and of course the immeasurable amount of service he gave to the game. But one thing is for sure - there would be no Panjabi music scene today if it wasn’t for him!

Back when ‘DHOL FIRE’ was supposed to be a single…

It was the night after the release of ‘82’. .1, , and I were sitting in celebrating a successful release of the new single.

At that point, it was mentioned that the next single was due to be a track called ‘DHOL FIRE’. A track with that name alone was enough for me to want to be involved in some way, shape or form. When it was then highlighted that the track was going to be on the 90s // flex, that was it - I HAD TO DO THE ARTWORK!

For those who know me, and even those who don’t, will know I am a massive fan of those artists and THAT sound, in particular. At the same time, I regularly listen to tracks like ‘Challeh Mundhia’ and ‘Shindeh Di Tape’. So, when it was agreed that I would be making the single artwork for ‘Dhol Fire’, like ‘82’, I had to bring my A-game.

When JK and I sat to conceptualise the artwork, we wanted something that popped and drew you in, whilst maintaining a fresh feel. We both agreed on no text on the artwork, but I wanted to somehow tease that it was a Dhol track, without saying anything, but saying everything, if that makes sense. Hence the Dhol in the car and JK holding a Dagga and Thilli.

When ‘Dhol Fire’ then became a feature on ‘Art of Panjab’, it meant this artwork would almost become redundant, but we all wanted to show you what would have been the artwork if the track dropped as a single…

Let me know what you think!

STILL THE CALIFORNIA KING?

Naa! He never stopped being the California King for us REAL Bhangra Headz!

The Folk Warrior of California makes a return to the scene, this time surprising us with a FULL EP titled ‘Still The California King’, with music provided by none other than the Music Man himself, ! Yes, you heard that right! I know, I fainted too!

Having quite literally EXPLODED onto the scene in 1996 with his debut, ‘Kuri Giddeh Wich Ayee’, on the album, ‘The Dholaholics’, ’s place in the scene was well and truly affirmed! And what a debut that was! What a voice - piercingly Desi! Complimented by the masterful production by , ‘Kuri Giddeh Wich Ayee’ was and still is an anthem!

The debut album ‘Folk Warrior of California’ soon followed, featuring the hit song, ‘Nachdi Di Video’, which then made way for the sophomore album, ‘Calfornia King’, featuring a personal favourite, ‘Jatt Diyan Boliyan’, very quickly became a force to be reckoned with! Both albums unsurprisingly featured PRIME TIME production from !

Unfortunately after ‘Dhol Beat Dho’, we never got to hear a & collaboration again… until now!

Fast forward to 2025, and are all set to finally give the fans what they’ve been yearning for nearly 3 DECADES, a collaboration that takes us back to a time when, let’s face it, Bhangra kicked ass!

Just from the promo that’s released, Shinda’s luculent Dhol takes centre stage, leaving us salivating at the thought of what this EP will bring. Shinda has proven with ’s ‘Londono Patola Reloaded’ that he can go back to THAT sound in heartbeat, so my hopes are definitely up!

OUT TOMORROW (27th Feb 2025)!

WORD IS BORN - 20TH ANNIVERSARY

And on that note, let’s get back to the programme…

Last Tuesday (10th December) was a very special evening, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the iconic album that is ‘WORD IS BORN’ by Specialist ‘N’ Tru-Skool. The insights, stories, audience participation and exclusive sneak peaks of alternative versions of tracks we know and love all contributed to a brilliant night.

To be involved in the planning and ex*****on of such an event, which has added to an already monumental legacy, has been an incredible honour.

Co-hosting the event, that too alongside the legendary , is something not to be taken lightly - the Bhangra Encyclopaedia himself!

A massive thanks goes out to & for entrusting BTD to play such a substantial part in the celebration of an album that changed the course of the Panjabi music scene as we know it! Feels like a full circle moment since the Flashback Friday article back in Jan 2017!

For those that attended, please drop your comments below! We’d love to hear what you thought of the event!

“If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going.” - Maya Angelou

Our music, our culture will constantly evolve, as does everything with time. But to keep building, you need to know how it all started - the foundations.

Enter ‘LISHKARA’ - an open forum to explore Panjabi culture in more detail.

Just when you think the youth aren’t embracing the undiluted, traditional, rich culture that defines us Panjabis, something like this pops up - SICK!

We quickly caught up with .artist, who is spearheading this new forum, to hear what he had to say about ‘LISHKARA’:

“Over the past year or so, we’ve seen Panjabi folk music reach new heights, globally. The UK scene is beginning to grow once again and Panjabi Folk has experienced a resurgence through vinyl resellers, TikToks and club remixes. A whole new generation has fallen in love with Panjabi Folk music.

‘LISHKARA’ aims to provide a platform for highly trained Panjabi Folk musicians, as well as promote Panjabi Folklore and culture through interactive talks.” - .artist

‘LISHKARA’ has a wide remit and quite the task ahead of itself, no doubt. But when you have a culture as rich and as vibrant as ours, let’s face it, one night was never going to cut it.

Looking forward to this one.
