Showkat Pandit Urges J&K Lawmakers to Raise Issue of Daily Wager’s Death in Assembly

Langate, Oct 27: Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader and former BDC Chairman Langate, Showkat Hassan Pandit, has appealed to all members of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to raise the issue of daily wage workers who lose their lives while on duty.

Pandit said these workers serve shoulder-to-shoulder with permanent employees but are denied the basic rights and benefits they deserve. He called the matter a serious humanitarian concern that demands urgent attention from the government.

“Daily wagers work tirelessly to keep essential services running, yet their families are left helpless when tragedy strikes. It is time the Assembly adopts a joint resolution to ensure protection and welfare measures for their families,” Pandit said.

Referring to the latest incident, he expressed deep sorrow over the death of a daily wage worker, Javed Ahmad Paray, son of Mohammad Ramzan Paray, a resident of Ujroo Langate, who lost his life while on duty in the Power Development Department (PDD). Pandit said it was unfortunate that the department failed to provide any immediate assistance to the bereaved family.

He urged all legislators and the Chief Minister to honor their election promises and raise this issue in the ongoing Assembly session.

“Leaders across parties promised to speak for daily wagers during election campaigns. Now is the time to act, not just speak,” Pandit added.

*Opposing Daily Wager Bill Is Betrayal of Poor Workers: Showkat Pandit*

Senior Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader and former BDC Chairman Langate, Showkat Hassan Pandit, on Tuesday said that the Bill for Daily Wagers is not just about salaries but about justice, dignity, and survival of thousands of families who have kept essential services running for years.

Pandit said that daily wagers, who work in harsh conditions without job security, have built the backbone of public infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir. “They are the ones who keep our water flowing, our lights on, and our roads clear. Denying them fair treatment is an injustice to humanity,” he said.

He warned that anyone who stands against this bill is standing against the poor families who have served the government selflessly for decades. “Opposing this bill means turning your back on the sweat and sacrifice of our working class. It means denying justice to those who have given their lives to public service without recognition,” Pandit added.

He urged the legislators to pass the bill unanimously, calling it a test of their commitment to the people. “This is about human rights and social justice. The Assembly must act with conscience,” Pandit said.

He appealed to all parties to rise above politics and support the workers’ cause.

*MLA Sheikh Khursheed Denied Meeting with Jailed MLA Mehraj Malik, Calls it “Assault on Democracy”*

Srinagar, September 29: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi has expressed strong resentment over the denial of a lawful meeting between Senior AIP leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed and jailed MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik.

According to Inam Un Nabi, Sheikh Khursheed travelled to Kathua Jail with the intent to meet the incarcerated legislator from Doda Mehraj Malik but was shockingly barred entry by the Jail Superintendent and the Deputy Commissioner Kathua. “This is not just administrative high-handedness, but a blatant assault on democratic principles,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Sheikh Khursheed met the father of MLA Mehraj Malik, extending solidarity and assuring him that AIP stands unwaveringly with the family in this time of pain. Taking his grievance to the media, Sheikh Khursheed said, “I met the father of Hon’ble MLA Doda Mehraj Malik to share his pain because I too am a victim of the same treatment. Yet, Jail Superintendent & DC Kathua denied my lawful right to meet him. This is an assault on democracy!”

Inam Un Nabi reiterated that barring elected representatives from meeting each other in jail amounts to stifling political space in Jammu and Kashmir. He demanded immediate intervention from higher authorities and called upon democratic institutions, civil society and the judiciary to take cognizance of the unlawful denial of rights to public representatives.
