The Delhi High Court has delivered a landmark judgment in favor of law students, ruling that no student can be barred from appearing in semester exams or promoted to the next semester merely due to shortage of attendance. The Court clarified that law colleges cannot impose attendance norms stricter than those prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). In cases of low attendance, marks may be reduced by a maximum of 5%. Additionally, the Court directed all law colleges to conduct extra classes for such students, establish Grievance Redressal Commissions with 51% student representation, and instructed the BCI to work on improving mental health support and internship opportunities in legal education. The judgment stems from the tragic Sushant Rohilla case, a law student who died by suicide after being harassed over low attendance.
