In brief,
The Water Festival, known in Khmer as Bon Om Touk (B.O.T.), is one of Cambodia’s most joyful and meaningful celebrations. It takes place every year during the full moon of the Khmer lunar month Kattik, usually in early November. The festival marks the reversal of the Tonlé Sap River’s flow, a natural phenomenon that brings life and prosperity to the nation.

Over three vibrant days, people from across the country gather to enjoy boat races, floating lanterns, and the Ak Ambok full-moon ceremony. The first day features exciting long-boat races along rivers, especially in Phnom Penh, where colorful boats represent different provinces. The second night glows with floating lanterns (Bandet Protib), symbolizing gratitude to the river spirits.

The final night, called Ak Ambok, is the heart of the celebration — when families gather under the full moon to eat ambok (pounded rice with banana and coconut), worship the moon, and pray for peace, health, and good harvests. The festival beautifully unites nature, religion, and community, showing the deep bond Cambodians share with their land and water.
