How do you handle recurring supplier quality issues?

What they want: Problem-solving ability.

How to answer:

“When I face recurring supplier quality issues, my approach is systematic and data-driven. I start by implementing containment actions to isolate the affected parts and prevent defective material from reaching production. Then, I work closely with the supplier to perform a root cause analysis using tools like 5 Whys or a Fishbone diagram to identify the underlying problem.

Once the root cause is clear, we use the 8D problem-solving process to develop and verify corrective and preventive actions — for example, updating work instructions, retraining operators, or improving process controls.

In one case, a supplier had repeated dimensional defects in machined components. After analysis, we found tool wear was not being monitored properly. We introduced a tool life tracking system and a final inspection checkpoint, which eliminated the recurring defect and improved their PPM performance by 60% within two months.”
