At Lakshman Iyya’s hostel in Gopichettipalayam, We at Thumbi children's magazine keep trying little ways to bring joy and learning to the children. This week’s workshop was by Subid Anna, who came and spent a whole day with these children, showing how to make toys out of waste.
The children’s eyes lit up. Old wires, bottle caps, bits of cardboard, things we usually throw away, suddenly all of it became treasure. In no time, the room was full of excitement. Little hands were busy cutting, bending, tying. A bottle cap became a spinning top, a small piece of paper turned into a tiny creature, even an old calendar turned into butterflies that reach every child’s hands fluttering it’s wings.
Watching them, we were reminded of something, children don’t need much to be happy. Give them a spark of curiosity, and they take over the whole space with energy and imagination. That’s what happened here.
This is what Ahimsa Toys is all about. Subid Anna has dedicated his life to this work. He travels across India with just a small bag of scrap and helps children discover that play doesn’t have to come from shops. It can come from their own hands, from things already around them. More than toys, he shares a way of looking at the world, nothing is useless, everything can be turned into something beautiful if we care enough.
By the end of the day, the children were running around proudly showing each other what they had made. Their joy was contagious. We too felt lighter, hopeful.
