𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗶!
Shabir Magami, born in 1984 in Magam, Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, is a distinguished contemporary Kashmiri poet, translator, and critic. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Kashmir, a position he has held since 2013.
Magami's literary work delves into a wide array of themes, including life, death, loss, hope, joy, and the poignant realities of Kashmir. His poetry is regularly featured in leading journals, both in its original Kashmiri and in English translation. Notably, his ghazals have been composed and performed by prominent Kashmiri singers, garnering a dedicated following among both young and older audiences.
Despite his growing influence in the literary community, Magami has yet to publish a standalone poetry collection. However, his active participation in Mushairas (poetry symposiums), radio programs, and invitations to speak at Young Poets’ Conferences organized by the Sahitya Akademi in Assam and Tripura highlight his significant role in contemporary Kashmiri literature.
Magami's academic background includes studies in English literature at Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Kashmir. His deep appreciation for Urdu and Kashmiri poetry, inspired by literary figures such as Ghalib, Faiz, Mir, Jigar Muradabadi, Rehman Rahi, Abdul Ahad Azad, and Amin Kamil, has profoundly influenced his poetic voice.
In addition to his poetic endeavors, Magami is active on social media platforms, sharing his work and engaging with a broader audience. His presence on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook allows him to connect with poetry enthusiasts and contribute to the promotion of Kashmiri literature.
Through his creative and academic contributions, Shabir Magami continues to enrich the cultural and literary landscape of Kashmir, blending traditional themes with modern insights to reflect the complexities of contemporary life in the region.
