Residents of the Umrongsoโ€“Garampani area have raised serious concerns over persistent poor telecom connectivity provided by Jio and Airtel.

In a complaint submitted to the District Commissioner, Dima Hasao, through the ADC, social worker Lakpa Lama stated that the area has been facing frequent network disruptions for a considerable period.

According to the complaint, the situation becomes particularly severe during electricity breakdowns, when mobile towers reportedly shut down due to inadequate or non-functional backup power systems and fuel arrangements.

The complaint also points out that while mobile recharge prices continue to increase, the quality of connectivity remains poor, causing inconvenience to subscribers.

The disruption is reportedly affecting students, businesses, the general public and emergency services in the area.

Lakpa Lama Seeks District Administration Intervention

Lakpa Lama has urged the District Administration to intervene immediately and take appropriate action to ensure that telecom companies properly maintain their backup power systems.

The complaint seeks restoration of uninterrupted telecom services for the people of Umrongso and surrounding areas.

Teachersโ€™ Day was observed with enthusiasm at Raja Govind Chandra Aarsh Gurukulam, Dayanand Durg, Wasaikhong, Diyungbra, Dima Hasao district, Assam, in the presence of Honโ€™ble Member of Parliament Shri former MLA Shri , , Chairman, Block Development, Karbi Anglong, along with respected citizens from the Hills and Plains districts of Assam.
Before the commencement of the programme, the Honโ€™ble MP and other guests paid homage to the Dimaraji martyrs at the memorial constructed during the peace talks with the Government of Assam.
During the programme, MP Shri Amar Sing Tiso assured support for the infrastructure development of the Gurukulam through MPLAD funds. He also encouraged the teachers and students through his address and emphasized the importance of education and the role of teachers in society.
On the occasion, Shri Sakun Lal Daudung Langthasa, President, Dimasa Peoples Council (DPC), Assam West Karbi Anglong District Committee, submitted a written memorandum to MP Shri Amar Sing Tiso seeking construction and improvement of connectivity on three proposed routes:
โ€ข Hajagefer to Sambaria, Lanka, via Alisinga and Hamrum.
โ€ข Maijiahadi, West Karbi Anglong to Lanka, via Bordolong, Lanka Bheta Tribal Belt and Block area.
โ€ข Hawaipur Market to Lanka Railway Station, via Machaga and Jamuguri in West Karbi Anglong district.
The Managing Committee expressed its gratitude to Honโ€™ble MP Shri Amar Sing Tiso and his colleagues for attending the Teachersโ€™ Day programme and extending their support and cooperation towards making the event a grand success.

Former MLA and former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Samarjit Haflongbar, has welcomed and extended his full support to the change in nomenclature from โ€œNorth Cachar Hills Autonomous Councilโ€ to โ€œDima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC)โ€.

In a press statement, Haflongbar said his position on the issue should be made โ€œabsolutely clear,โ€ stating that he welcomes the name โ€œDima Hasao Autonomous Councilโ€ and supports its proper implementation in accordance with the constitutional provisions governing the Autonomous Council.

Calls for Constitutional Amendment

Haflongbar pointed to Paragraph 2(3) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India, which provides for the corporate name of a District Council and contains provisions relating to the nomenclature of Autonomous Councils.

He noted that the existing constitutional text continues to refer to the โ€œNorth Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.โ€ Therefore, he said, while implementing the new nomenclature, the corresponding constitutional provision should also be suitably amended so that โ€œDima Hasao Autonomous Councilโ€ is formally reflected in the Sixth Schedule.

Refers to 2015 Constitutional Amendment Bill

The former CEM also referred to the Government of Indiaโ€™s proposed Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Third Amendment) Bill, 2015, which included proposed amendments relating to the Sixth Schedule.

According to Haflongbar, the proposed amendments had referred to the nomenclatures โ€œKarbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Councilโ€ and โ€œDima Hasao Autonomous Territorial Council.โ€ He said this indicates that a change in the constitutional nomenclature concerning Dima Hasao had already been contemplated at the Government of India level.

Appeal for Peace and Understanding

Haflongbar reiterated that there should be no misunderstanding or confusion regarding his stand and reaffirmed his support for adopting โ€œDima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC)โ€ in place of โ€œNorth Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.โ€

He appealed to all sections of the people of Dima Hasao, irrespective of community, caste, creed or religion, to understand the nomenclature issue from its proper constitutional perspective and avoid unnecessary controversy.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and former CEM of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council has appealed to the people of Dima Hasao to remain alert against deforestation, excessive riverbed and riverbank mining, hill-cutting and obstruction of natural drainage systems.

Warisa warned that unscientific environmental activities could increase the risks of riverbank erosion, landslides, flash floods and changes in river courses, besides threatening roads, bridges, railway infrastructure, agricultural land and settlements.

He also urged the DHAC, District Administration, Forest Department, Mines & Geology authorities and elected representatives to conduct proper inspections, verify mining permissions and take action against violations.

He appealed to the public to report suspected illegal or environmentally harmful activities with photographs, videos and location details to the competent authorities.

โ€œProtect the Land, Hills, Rivers, Forests, Culture and Dima Hasao,โ€ Warisa said.

The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished philosopher, educationist, scholar and the second President of India.
Who was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tiruttani, in the Madras Presidency. From a modest background, he went on to become one of India's most respected philosophers and teachers.
He had a deep interest in Indian philosophy, religion and education. As an academic, he taught philosophy at several institutions and became known internationally for explaining Indian philosophical thought to the wider world.
His contribution to education and philosophy eventually led him into public life. He served as Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962 and then became the second President of India, serving from 13 May 1962 to 13 May 1967.

How did Teachersโ€™ Day begin?
The story behind Teachersโ€™ Day is closely connected with Radhakrishnan's own humility.
When some of his students and admirers wanted to celebrate his birthday, he reportedly suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday personally, 5 September should be observed as a day to honour teachers.
Thus, his birthday became associated with Teachersโ€™ Day in Indiaโ€”a tradition that celebrates the teaching profession and the people who guide generations.

Radhakrishnan believed that education was much more than acquiring information. For him, teachers had a vital responsibility in developing character, wisdom and responsible citizens.

On the eve of Teachersโ€™ Day, former MLA and former CEM of NCHAC Samarjit Haflongbar has appealed to the Assam Government to address the long-pending issue of nine contractual lecturers of Haflong Government College.

According to Haflongbar, the lecturers have reportedly been serving the college for around 13 years without regularisation and adequate job security. He said the lecturers possess the required qualifications, including SLET and Ph.D., as applicable, and have continued to provide dedicated academic service.

He also highlighted the importance of Haflong Government College as a major higher-education institution in Sixth Schedule-administered Dima Hasao, where opportunities for higher education remain limited.

Haflongbar appealed to Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu and the State Government to give urgent and sympathetic consideration to the matter and take appropriate steps towards regularisation and permanent service security for the nine lecturers.

He said the best tribute to teachers on Teachersโ€™ Day would be to recognise their years of dedicated service and safeguard their dignity, livelihood and future.

The Assam Government has issued a notification transferring two IAS officers in the interest of public service.
Aranyak Saikia, IAS (RR-2020), the District Commissioner of Karbi Anglong, has been transferred and posted as District Commissioner, Nagaon.
Meanwhile, Kriti Chachra, IAS (RR-2021), Joint Secretary, Department of Housing & Urban Affairs, has been appointed as the new District Commissioner, Karbi Anglong.
