Apple iPhone works after getting wet in sea, saves 8 lives

Apple iPhones are known of their specifications and looks but the device has also managed to save lives of many users. According to a recent online report, Apple iPhone has once again managed to save lives of eight people.

As reported by Apple Insider, a woman named Rachel Neal along with her boyfriend and a few others took a boat in order to go to an island on the coast of Okinawa. However, when they were returning from there the high sea overturned their boat. All the eight people who were wearing life jackets just just jumped overboard.

Rachel who works for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) used here presence of mind and brought a Go bag with her which consisted of things which could be used during emergency. The bag also had Rachel and her boyfriend's cell phone. First they tried using her boyfriend's phone but the phone was damaged because of too much water. But Rachel's iPhone was working fine despite being drenched in water. She informed the emergency services and after 90 minutes all the eight passengers were rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard.

The iPhone model used by Rachel is not mentioned in the report. But the only thing known is that the iPhone has iP rating. The company introduced iPhones with IP rating with the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 to recently launched iPhone XR all come with IP67 rating. These iPhone can be submerged in water up to 3 feet for the period of 30 minutes. This year launched iPhone XS and XS Max come with IP68 rating which can be submerged in 5 feet water for 30 minutes.

As per the report, Rachel's phone is still working fine and she is using the same phone. Here is the clip of the incident mentioned above.

Oracle Corp filed a protest with the US Department of Defense over its plans to award a cloud computing contract that could be worth up to $10 billion to a single company instead of allowing for multiple winners. The Defense Department opened the competition in July and said a single winner would allow for the most rapid adoption of the technology. It said the deal's initial two-year period would provide time to ensure the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud contract was up to standards, and that new contractors would be needed for other cloud computing demands in the future.Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger said in a statement on Tuesday that the single award assured that the Department of Defense would be locked in a contract with a legacy cloud provider for a decade or longer.Hellinger said that approach was "contrary to industry's multi-cloud strategy, which promotes constant competition, fosters innovation and lowers prices."The Government Accountability Office has until Nov. 14 to respond to the protest. Bids are to be accepted through September. The deal has been closely watched because Amazon.com Inc has been considered a top contender.
The competition has attracted criticism from companies that fear Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud unit, will win the contract, snuffing out hopes that others will break into government cloud computing. Amazon Web Services is the only company the U.S. government has approved to handle secret and top secret data.Other US companies expected to compete include Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), Oracle Corp (ORCL.N), IBM Corp and Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google.

Facebook Inc said on Monday it is in talks to deepen links with banks and financial institutions, saying it can help the firms improve their customer service. The social media company said users of financial firms such as PayPal , Citibank and American Express could link their financial accounts with Facebook's Messenger and chat with a customer service representative. The Wall Street Journal had reported that Facebook had asked banks to share detailed financial information about their customers, including card transactions and checking-account balances.A Facebook spokeswoman said the company could see some financial information from such users if they choose to opt-in, but did not use it for "advertising or anything else"."We're not using this information beyond enabling these (customer service) types of experiences," Facebook said in a statement. "A critical part of these partnerships is keeping people's information safe and secure."The Journal report said Facebook over the past year has asked JPMorgan Chase , Wells Fargo & Co , Citigroup Inc and U.S. Bancorp to discuss potential offerings it could host for bank customers on Facebook Messenger.
"The idea is that messaging with a bank can be better than waiting on hold over the phone," the company said.

A computer virus outbreak has hit third-quarter results at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd, the world's largest contract chipmaker, the company said.TSMC, a major supplier for Apple Inc, said that a number of its computer systems and fab tools had been infected by a virus, but the problem had been contained. The company expects full recovery on August 6, the company said in an updated statement on Sunday."TSMC expects this incident to cause shipment delays and additional costs. We estimate the impact to third quarter revenue to be about three percent, and impact to gross margin to be about one percentage point," it said.
"The company is confident shipments delayed in third quarter will be recovered in the fourth quarter 2018, and maintains its forecast of high single-digit revenue growth for 2018 in U.S. dollars given on July 19, 2018."The chipmaker has notified its customers and is working with them on the wafer delivery schedule. Details will be provided to each customer individually over the next few days, it said. The virus outbreak occurred during the software installation for a new tool, which caused a virus to spread once the tool was connected to the company's computer network, TSMC said."Data integrity and confidential information was not compromised. TSMC has taken actions to close this security gap and further strengthen security measures," it said.

Word that Google is crafting a search engine to meet China's draconian censorship rules has sparked widespread employee anger at the company which has responded by limiting workers' access to documents about the project.Google was scurrying to stop leaks and quell outrage inside the company over what had been a stealth project prior to a report this week by news website The Intercept."Everyone's access to documents got turned off, and is being turned on [on a] document-by-document basis," a source told the news site.
"There's been total radio silence from leadership, which is making a lot of people upset and scared. ... Our internal meme site and Google Plus are full of talk, and people are a.n.g.r.y."
Google withdrew its search engine from China eight years ago due to censorship and hacking but it is now working on a project for the country codenamed "Dragonfly," an employee told AFP on condition of anonymity. The search project -- which works like a filter that sorts out certain topics -- can be tested within the company's internal networks, according to the worker."There's a lot of angst internally. Some people are very mad we're doing it," the source told AFP.
The tech giant had already come under fire this year from thousands of employees who signed a petition against a $10-million contract with the US military, which was not renewed.
A Google spokesman declined to confirm or deny the existence of the project."We provide a number of mobile apps in China, such as Google Translate and Files Go, help Chinese developers, and have made significant investments in Chinese companies like JD.com," spokesman Taj Meadows told AFP when news of Dragonfly broke."But we don't comment on speculation about future plans."A Bloomberg report on Friday said that Google's effort to get back into China includes seeking local partners, perhaps Tencent Holdings, to provide datacenter and computing capacity for services hosted in the internet cloud.Google did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.US internet titans have long struggled with doing business in China, home of a "Great Firewall" that blocks politically sensitive content, such as the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and The New York Times website are blocked in China, but Microsoft's Bing search engine continues to operate. In early 2010, Google shut down its search engine in mainland China after rows over censorship and hacking.Google had cried foul over what it said were cyber attacks aimed at its source code and the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
But the company still employs 700 people in three offices in China working on other projects. The effort to regain footing in China comes amid a US-China trade war, with both sides imposing tit-for-tat tariffs and President Donald Trump accusing Beijing of stealing US technological know-how.

Many smartphone users are already using Android P on their smartphones. However, they are using the beta version as Google has not yet released the official version for it. The beta versions are not that stable and we also don’t know the proper name of Android P as well. But it seems that the wait is going to end soon.According to popular tipster Evan Blass, the tech giant will launch the final version of Android P on August 20. Blass has tweeted that the launch date for Android P as August 20, which is accordance to that of Android O launch of August 21, 2017 on the day of solar eclipse. It is expected that the final version of Android P will be first rolled out for Google Pixel and Pixel 2 series of smartphones. As per rumors, it is expected that either the company will call the next version of Android as Pistachio or Popsicle. To recall, the company released the first beta version of Android P at its annual developer conference Google I/O 2018. The beta version bought features like indoor positioning, improved messaging experience, notch support, multi-camera support and others.
Last week, Google released the final developer preview of Android P. The company at that time revealed that the features which are part of this update are definitely coming to the next version. One of the important feature is the gesture-based navigation system, which the company is improving since the release of the first developer preview of Android P.
Earlier this week, Google released a new set of guidelines for developers for updating their apps so that they can support the notch screen. Along with giving tips to the developers, the company has also laid down some rules for smartphone makers which will ensure app compatibility across their devices with screen notch.

Bitcoin and similar blockchain technologies consume more electricity than entire nations and may prevent the world from achieving the climate change mitigation targets under the Paris Agreement, a study has warned. The study, published in the journal Energy Research & Social Science, evaluates the financial and legal options available to lawmakers to moderate blockchain-related energy consumption and foster a sustainable and innovative technology sector.Researchers recommend an approach that imposes new taxes, charges, or restrictions to reduce demand by users, miners, and miner manufacturers who employ polluting technologies, and offers incentives that encourage developers to create less energy-intensive/carbon-neutral blockchain."Digital currency mining is the first major industry developed from blockchain, because its transactions alone consume more electricity than entire nations," said Jon Truby, an assistant professor at Qatar University."It needs to be directed towards sustainability if it is to realise its potential advantages," said Truby."Many developers have taken no account of the environmental impact of their designs, so we must encourage them to adopt consensus protocols that do not result in high emissions," he said."Taking no action means we are subsidising high energy-consuming technology and causing future blockchain developers to follow the same harmful path," he added.
As a digital ledger that is accessible to, and trusted by all participants, blockchain technology decentralises and transforms the exchange of assets through peer-to-peer verification and payments.Blockchain technology has been advocated as being capable of delivering environmental and social benefits under the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. However, Bitcoin's system has been built in a way that is reminiscent of physical mining of natural resources - costs and efforts rise as the system reaches the ultimate resource limit and the mining of new resources requires increasing hardware resources, which consume huge amounts of electricity."The processes involved in a single Bitcoin transaction could provide electricity to a British home for a month - with the environmental costs socialised for private benefit," said Truby. The study evaluates various blockchain technologies by their carbon footprints and recommends how to tax or restrict blockchain types at different phases of production and use to discourage polluting versions and encourage cleaner alternatives. It also analyses the legal measures that can be introduced to encourage technology innovators to develop low-emissions blockchain designs.
The specific recommendations include imposing levies to prevent path-dependent inertia from constraining innovation.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has surpassed Apple. With this, Huawei has become the second largest smartphone vendor in the world. The arrival of Huawei in the second position marks the first quarter since Q2-2010 where Apple has not been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share. With total 71.5 million units delivered during Q2 2018, Samsung remained on the top. The company managed to maintain its top position despite the year-over-year fall of 10.4% in shipments. Samsung has 20.9% market in the second quarter. This also indicates that the current flagship device of the company -- Galaxy S9 is not performing well in the market.Huawei gained the second position with the total smartphone shipment of 54.2 million globally during the second quarter. The company witness year-over-year gain of 40.9%, which took the market share of the company to 15.8%. Apple on the other hand shipped 41.3 million iPhone units from April to June this year, with a small increase of 7%. The company has 12.1% market share world wide in the second quarter.Xiaomi sits on the fourth position with the delivery of 31.9 million phones during the three months and had the market share of 9.3%. The fifth smartphone maker in the list is also from China. Oppo saw an increase of 5.1% 5.1% over last year as it continued its expansion into other markets such as the Middle East & Africa.Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, said, "The continued growth of Huawei is impressive, to say the least, as is its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown. It is worth noting that Apple moved into the top position each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh, so it's likely we'll see continued movement among the top ranked companies in 2018 and beyond. For most markets, the ultra-high end ($700+) competition is largely some combination of Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, depending on the geography, and this is unlikely to change much in the short term. At the same time, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo are all slowly pushing their customer base upstream at a price tier slightly lower than the top three. This is an area they should all watch closely as the builds in this segment are getting increasingly more advanced."

Uber will stop developing self-driving trucks that have been hauling cargo on U.S. highways, the ride-hailing company said on Monday, seeking to focus its autonomous-vehicle technology solely on cars.Through its acquisition of Otto in 2016, Uber had sought to disrupt freight hauling with self-driving trucks and Uber Freight, its smartphone app that connects truck drivers and shippers.Uber Freight, which has seen "rapid" growth, is unaffected by the decision, the company said.Trucking has been viewed by transportation experts as a natural application for self-driving technology because of the relative predictability of highways compared with busy city streets.Uber had unveiled plans earlier this year to integrate manual trucking with self-driving trucks by deploying the former for short hauls and the latter for longer distances."We believe having our entire team's energy and expertise focused on (self-driving cars) is the best path forward," Eric Meyhofer, head of Uber Advanced Technologies Group, said in an emailed statement.San Francisco-based Uber faces competition from Silicon Valley companies including Tesla Inc and Alphabet Inc's Waymo as well as traditional automakers such as Ford and General Motors in the race to bring self-driving cars to the market.
Uber said it will move employees working on self-driving trucks to other internal roles within autonomous vehicle development.
