GCC launches cleanliness drive in Mogappair East

By Our Correspondent
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified its cleanliness efforts across the city with a focused drive to clear accumulated soil from roadways. As part of this initiative, GCC employees have been actively working in various neighbourhoods, including Mogappair East, to enhance urban cleanliness and improve road safety.
Recently, workers were observed removing soil from the roadways in Mogappair East, specifically in Ward 93 of the Ambattur Zone. This targeted operation is part of a broader cleanliness drive that aims to address the issue of soil accumulation along roadsides, which has been a persistent concern in several parts of Chennai.
The GCC's initiative in Mogappair East has been well received by local residents, who have expressed their support for the clean-up efforts. "The accumulation of soil on the roads has been a major problem for us. It not only looks unsightly but also poses a risk to pedestrians and motorists," said Mahimai Nathan, a resident of Mogappair East. "We are grateful to the Greater Chennai Corporation for taking prompt action to address this issue. It is a positive step towards a cleaner and safer neighbourhood," he added.
Another resident, who identified herself as Edith Joe, echoed these sentiments. "The roads here have been much cleaner since the work started. It is great to see the GCC focusing on these areas. I hope they continue with such efforts to maintain cleanliness in the long run," she added. The removal of soil is part of GCC's larger strategy to improve urban infrastructure and maintain the aesthetic and functional quality of city roads. The presence of accumulated soil can lead to various issues, including obstructed drainage, increased risk of accidents, and a general decline in the neighbourhood's appearance. By addressing these problems, the GCC aims to enhance the overall living conditions in affected areas.
GCC officials have emphasised that this clean-up drive is not a one-time event but part of an ongoing effort to ensure that roadways remain in good condition. "Our goal is to systematically address soil accumulation across the city, starting with areas that have been most affected," said a GCC Ambattur Zone spokesperson. "We are committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and road safety and will continue to monitor and address such issues as they arise," he added.

TNHB begins construction in Padikuppam, warns trespassers

By N Rathi Chithra
The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has recently taken significant steps toward developing new housing units in the Padikuppam area abutting Mogappair East, a move that marks a major advance in the neighbourhood's housing infrastructure plans. The Anna Nagar Division of the TNHB has fenced off its extensive land in Padikuppam with tall blue tin sheets, clearly delineating the boundaries of the property.
The fencing, which has now become a prominent feature of the area, is designed to secure the land in preparation for the construction project. Prominent notices have been placed around the perimeter of the fenced area, clearly stating that the land belongs to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. These notices outline the scope of the project, known as the Padikuppam Scheme, which aims to address the growing demand for housing in the region.
Under the Padikuppam Scheme, the TNHB plans to develop a range of housing units intended to provide good living spaces. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the TNHB to enhance housing availability and improve living standards.
In a bid to prevent unauthorised access and potential encroachments, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board has issued a stern warning to the public. The notice emphasises that any attempt to trespass into the fenced-off area with the intention of encroaching on the property will be met with legal action. The TNHB has made it clear that such actions will be prosecuted under the law with the involvement of local police authorities.
This proactive measure is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the project and ensuring that the development proceeds without disruption.
The announcement of the Padikuppam Scheme has been met with a mix of anticipation and concern. While many local residents and prospective homeowners welcome the promise of new housing options, there is also a heightened awareness of the legal and logistical challenges that accompany large-scale development projects and also the fact that nowadays the TNHB offers its projects almost at market price levels.
As construction progresses, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board is expected to provide further updates on the timeline and specifics of the housing units to be built.

Now elevated bays created for garbage collection bins

By N Rathi Chithra
Residents of Ambattur and Mogappair are expressing relief and gratitude as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) takes significant steps to improve waste management in their neighbourhoods. The civic agency has initiated the establishment of dedicated bays for placing large garbage bins, a long-standing demand among local residents. This development is expected to alleviate the congestion caused by bins placed directly on roadways, a common complaint that has often disrupted traffic.
The newly created bays feature slightly elevated platforms along the roadside, designed specifically for housing these large garbage collection bins. The implementation of this initiative has already begun, with one of the first elevated bays established in Division 82 of the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Local resident Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper in Ambattur, expressed his satisfaction with the civic agency's decision. "For years, we have faced the problem of garbage bins cluttering the roads. It was a nightmare for motorists and pedestrians alike. This new elevated bay is a welcome change that will help keep our streets cleaner and safer," Kumar said.
Mogappair residents have similarly welcomed the initiative. Lalitha Selvam, a homemaker in Mogappair East, noted, "Every morning, I would see our roads partially blocked by these bins, making it difficult for people to use the road. It is great to see the authorities finally addressing this issue. We hope to see more such improvements across the neighbourhood."
The establishment of these elevated platforms comes after repeated calls for action, including several report in the Mogappair Mail. The publication has highlighted the challenges faced by residents regarding garbage collection for months, underscoring the need for more effective waste management solutions.
An official from the Greater Chennai Corporation commented on the new initiative, stating, "This step is part of our broader strategy to enhance waste management. The dedicated bays will not only declutter the roads but also encourage residents to dispose of their waste more responsibly."
Another resident, Anand, who frequently commutes through Mogappair West, expressed his approval of the initiative. "This is a practical solution that we have needed for a long time. It is important for the community to come together and support these efforts to keep our environment clean," he said.

Natural compost from Mogappair households now available for sale

By N Rathi Chithra
In a significant move towards promoting sustainable living, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has begun selling natural compost made from vegetable waste collected from households in the Mogappair neighbourhood. This initiative aims to encourage eco-friendly practices among residents while providing them with a valuable resource for gardening.
The compost, produced from biodegradable waste gathered from local homes, is now available at the GCC’s waste sorting facility on Mogappair Main Road in Ward 87. Residents can purchase this natural compost to enhance their kitchen gardens, terrace gardens, and other gardening projects.
Local resident Thilagarajan expressed his enthusiasm for the new initiative. “This is fantastic news! I have a small terrace garden at home, and using natural compost will help my plants thrive. It’s great to see the GCC taking steps towards sustainability,” the elderly resident said.
Another resident, who introduced himself as ‘Lens’ Krishnan, echoed his sentiments. “I have always been interested in gardening, but I have struggled to find quality compost. Knowing that this compost is made from local waste gives me confidence in its quality. Plus, it helps reduce waste in our community,” he noted.
The sale of compost is a part of the GCC’s broader initiative to manage waste effectively and promote recycling among residents. By converting vegetable waste into usable compost, the corporation not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills but also supports local gardening efforts. “Using organic compost is much healthier for my plants compared to chemical fertilizers. This initiative is a win-win for us and the environment,” added Meena, another enthusiastic gardener in the area.
The compost is available for purchase directly from the waste sorting facility, making it accessible to all residents. “It’s very convenient for us. I can just go to the facility and pick up compost whenever I need it. This should encourage more people to start gardening,” said Venkatesh, a frequent visitor to the facility.
The GCC has also planned awareness campaigns to educate residents on the benefits of composting and how to use it effectively in their gardens. “It’s important for the community to understand how composting works and how they can contribute. I hope more people will get involved in gardening using this natural compost,” stated a local environmental activist Kavitha.
