The Bhagsu waterfall otherwise called the Bhagsunag waterfalls is one such beautiful place to be in during the season. A visitor to the place will be refreshed b y the mere sight of this treasure which has overwhelming hills, refreshing greenery and craggy rocks; the waterfall is certainly a pleasure to visit.
Bhagsu has a known ancient Shiv temple. The main attraction for the tourists is not only the temple but also the Bhagsu waterfall and the public swimming pool.
LOCATION AND HEIGHT OF THE FALL
Bhagsu waterfall is located in Bhagsunaag village, 2 kms from McLeodganj, behind the Bhagsu temple, in the district of Dharmasala, state of Himachal Pradesh. The waterfall is 7112 feet (2165 meters) in height.
HISTORY
The name of the waterfall has been derived from that of the vanquished King Bhagsu. The folklore that makes it round in the place is that about 5000 years ago, Nagdevta, the snake God declared a war against King Bhagsu who dared to steal the sacred water from Nagdal Lake. The king was defeated by Nagdevta and forgiven. At this site was built the sacred Bhagsunag temple which gives importance to the king and to the snake god and the waterfall got the name of Bhagsunag. The temple is revered by the Ghorkhali community.
HOW TO REACH THERE
Bhagsu waterfall is a spectacular sight especially because it needs a bit of hard trek to reach there. One needs to climb half a mountain with marked pathways. There is a marked path littered with beautiful stones that was actually a river which dried up during the dry season. There are no vehicle facilities to reach there. The town of Dharamshala is 2 kilometers from Bhagsu village and the temple is only 1 kilometer from Mc Leodganj. The distance from Pathankot to McLeod Ganj is 88 km and is a 3-hour journey to the valley of the waterfall .The nearest airport is Gaggal, which is 15 kilometers from Dharamshala. The nearest narrow gauge railway station is in Kangra and Nagrota, which is 20 kms. from Dharamsala. The nearest broad gauge station is at Pathankot, which is 85 kilometers away. Passengers can hire taxis or cabs from outside the railway station to reach the destination. There are a lot of buses and taxies that ply from these places to Bhagsu. Transport is next to impossible during the monsoon because of the hazards of landslides.

The important tourist places near to this water fall are:
Bhagsunag temple located I km from McLeodGanj is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Bhagsu Nag the snake God, and to Lord Shiva, has a fresh water spring and has great historical significance.
MCLeodganj is the centre of the Tibetan administration in exile. The Dalai Lama’s presence and Tibetan population has made Dharamshala a popular destination for Indian and foreign tourists.
St. Johns Church is dedicated to John the Baptist built in 1852, located near Dharamsala and is open from 10 am – 5 pm on all days.
Norbulingka Institute was founded in 1988 by Kalsang and Kim Yeshi at Sidhpur near Dharamsala. It is dedicated to the preservation of the Tibetan art and culture in its literary and artistic form. It is open all days except public holidays.
Kangra Art Museum is situated at Kotwali bazaar, Dharamshala. It is a unique museum displaying the artifacts of Tibetan and Buddhist culture. It encloses a gallery consisting of Kangra’s rich past pottery, rare coins, sculptures and anthropological materials. Open between, 10 am – 1.30 pm and 2pm – 5pm.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
March and April are dry seasons. The best time to visit the waterfall is immediately after the monsoons when water cascades down 30 feet. The place is always cool but becomes very cold during winter and hence not advisable. Monsoons are present from July to September and there are chances of landslides, making the roads impassable. October and November are pleasant with temperatures at 25О C in lower regions and can be -1О C in the night at higher altitudes. Autumn and spring are considered the most favorable season. March and April are great for the beautiful sights.
