Air strike in Mayanmar killed 23 people took shelter in a Budhists monastry

An air strike on a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar's earthquake-struck area has killed 23 people , according to witnesses..

The resistance member — who spoke on condition of anonymity — said 23 civilians were killed when a jet fighter dropped a bomb on a building in the village's monastery midnight

They said more than 150 people from nearby villages had been taking shelter there to avoid recent fighting in the region.

Myanmar's independent Democratic Voice of Burma online media reported the number of death could be as high as 30, however the number could not be immediately confirmed.

The military did not immediately comment on the incident at the monastery, located about 35 kilometres north-west of Myanmar.

In the past, the army has said it only attacks legitimate targets of war and has accused the resistance forces of being terrorists.

The monastery housed about 200 people displaced by nearby fighting between the army and pro-democracy forces, The nature of the attack could not immediately be verified.

Military conducting air strikes despite quake
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power from the elected government in February 2021, triggering a civil war.

After peaceful demonstrations were put down with lethal force, many opponents of military rule took up arms.
However, the military has continued to launch air strikes and artillery attacks on rebel-controlled areas, including those already destroyed by the earthquake, which killed almost 3,700 people.

The military has increasingly used air strikes to counter opposition forces, including the armed People's Defence Force in the area, a stronghold of armed resistance.

The poll is widely seen as an attempt to normalise the military's seizure of power through the ballot box and to deliver a result that ensures the generals retain control.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed deep pride in the Indian diaspora in Namibia, commending their role in preserving Indian culture and fostering stronger ties between India and the southern African nation.

In a post the Prime Minister said, “The Indian community in Namibia is extremely optimistic about closer India-Namibia friendship and this reflected in the special welcome in Namibia. I am extremely proud of our diaspora, particularly the manner in which they have retained a connect with their culture and traditions.”

PM Modi arrived in Namibia earlier yesterday on the final leg of his five-nation tour. He received a traditional welcome at the International Airport, where he was greeted by Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

Local musicians performed at the airport to mark the occasion. In a gesture that drew warm applause, Prime Minister Modi joined the performers and played the Namibian drums, highlighting his appreciation for local customs and traditions.

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Namibia and only the third visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in the last 27 years.

Soon after his arrival, the Prime Minister posted “. Namibia is a valued and trusted African partner with whom we seek to boost bilateral cooperation.”

During the visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Namibian President. Both leaders are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in key areas such as energy, healthcare, education, digital technology, and development partnership.

The visit will also include an address to a Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament, marking an important milestone in India-Namibia relations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Namibia share historic ties dating back to India’s early support for Namibia’s independence movement. In 1946, India raised the issue of Namibian independence at the United Nations.

Ahead of his visit, PM Modi described Namibia as “a trusted partner” with whom India shares a “common history of struggle against colonialism.”

Prime Minister Modi said, “I look forward to meeting President and charting a new roadmap for cooperation for the benefit of our peoples, our regions and the wider Global South,” adding that addressing the Namibian Parliament would be a privilege as both nations celebrate “our enduring solidarity and shared commitment for freedom and development.”

The Prime Minister had earlier expressed confidence that his visits to the five countries would further
strengthen India’s ties across the Global South.

He further added that BRICS could play an important role in shaping a multipolar world.

In this regard, he offered four suggestions: 1st suggestion is that, the BRICS New Development Bank must follow demand driven principle and long-term sustainability for granting projects;
2nd , the group consider setting up a Science and Research repository which could benefit the global south countries;
3rd is that, focus must be given to make the supply chain of critical minerals secured and resilient; and, , the last one is that group should work for responsible Artificial intelligence - while looking into the concerns of AI governance, it should also give equal importance to promoting innovation in the field.
