Basic Messenger Privacy Settings That Everyone should know

Your Messenger account is filled with your private conversations, pictures, and sensitive information. It only takes a minute to set up your privacy settings and boost your online safety.

๐Ÿ”น 1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Increase the security of your Facebook and Messenger account by implementing one more security layer. If anyone steals your password, they wonโ€™t be able to access your account without a verification code

๐Ÿ”น 2. Configure Message Delivery Settings Set your preferences for who can send you a message, who will be redirected to your Message Requests, and who can't send you a message

๐Ÿ”น 3. Adjust Your Active Status Set the preference whether you want other people to know about your online status

๐Ÿ”น 4. Monitor Your Login Activity Periodically check which devices are connected to your account and disconnect any suspicious devices

๐Ÿ”น 5. Use End-to-End Encryption Chat Set up secure chats where only you and the recipient can read the messages.

Block Unwanted Users If you are being harassed by someone or feel any kind of threat from anyone, you should block them right away

๐Ÿ”น 7. Manage Story Privacy You can control the audience who can see your stories in Messenger or Facebook

๐Ÿ”น 8. Update Messenger Always update your messenger application for enhanced security

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ A few small changes in privacy settings can go a long way when it comes to securing your account

๐Ÿ” Hackers Donโ€™t Need Your Password Anymore

For years, the basic security advice was simple:

Use a strong password.

But modern attacks are increasingly focused on something more valuable than the password itself:

Your authenticated identity. ๐Ÿ‘ค

A password is only one part of the authentication process. Modern applications also rely on sessions, authentication cookies, access tokens, refresh tokens, OAuth permissions, and trusted devices.

If an attacker compromises one of these, knowing the victim's password may not always be necessary.

๐Ÿช Session Tokens

After you log in, a website typically gives your browser some form of session credential.

The browser then uses it to prove that you are already authenticated.

If that credential is stolen, an attacker may attempt to abuse the existing session.

This is why:

Strong password โ‰  Complete protection

๐Ÿ”‘ Access & Refresh Tokens

Modern applications frequently use tokens to maintain authentication.

Access tokens can provide access to specific resources, while refresh tokens can be used to obtain new access tokens.

If these credentials are improperly exposed or handled, they can become attractive targets for attackers.

โ˜๏ธ OAuth Can Become a Target

Many applications allow users to sign in through services such as Google, Microsoft, GitHub, and other identity providers.

OAuth makes authentication and authorization easier, but incorrectly configured permissions can create serious security problems.

The attacker may not need your password if they can abuse an already-authorized application or compromised identity.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Trusted Devices

Modern authentication systems often remember trusted devices and sessions.

That improves usability.

But from a security perspective, every persistent authentication mechanism becomes something that needs protection.

๐ŸŽญ Identity Is Becoming the New Perimeter

Traditional security focused heavily on:

Firewall โ†’ Server โ†’ Application

Modern environments increasingly look like:

User โ†’ Identity โ†’ Session โ†’ Cloud โ†’ SaaS โ†’ Data

This is why identity attacks are becoming such an important part of cybersecurity.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ How to Protect Yourself

Security isn't only about creating a stronger password.

You should also:

โ€ข Enable phishing-resistant MFA where available
โ€ข Review active sessions regularly
โ€ข Remove unused connected applications
โ€ข Review OAuth permissions
โ€ข Keep browsers and devices updated
โ€ข Avoid installing untrusted extensions
โ€ข Sign out of sensitive accounts on shared devices
โ€ข Monitor unexpected login and authentication activity
โ€ข Use least-privilege access for important accounts

โš ๏ธ The Important Lesson

Your password is only one key.

Modern applications may have many other keys:

๐Ÿ”‘ Password
๐Ÿช Session
๐ŸŽซ Access Token
๐Ÿ”„ Refresh Token
๐Ÿ”— OAuth Authorization
๐Ÿ“ฑ Trusted Device

Protecting only the password isn't enough anymore.

The future of account security isn't just about protecting passwords.

It's about protecting the entire digital identity behind them. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒ
