Irrfan Khan, actor extraordinaire and India’s face in the West, dies at 53
Actor Irrfan Khan has died at the age of 53, after being admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Tuesday, where was under observation for colon infection. India’s most recognisable face in the west and an actor par excellence, Irrfan had left India shocked in 2018 when he had announced that he’d been diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour.
“‘I trust, I have surrendered,’” were the words with which his family confirmed his death, while adding, “ These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heart felt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, ‘As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it’.”
The news of his death was shared on Twitter by filmmaker Shoojit Sircar. “My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. we shall meet again.. condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. you too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute,” he wrote.
Born to Muslim parents in the village of Tonk near Jaipur, Irrfan’s mother had a royal lineage but his father was a self-made man. Eldest of three siblings, Irrfan joined National School of Drama after his father’s death. Ironically, his mother, Saeeda Begum, died a few days before his death. Mira Nair was the first to spot his talent and cast him in Salaam Bombay in 1988. The two went on to collaborate again in the critically acclaimed The Namesake in 2006 and for the director’s segment in New York, I Love You.
After doing television for years in the 80s, a period of his career that he described as ‘being stuck’, Irrfan found his big break in Aasif Kapadia’s The Warrior. His career steadily progressed – in India where he went on from playing character roles to headlining films, and then went on to become India’s most celebrated face in the West. He earned steady kudos at home and abroad as a steady actor whose performances were lifelike, dependable.
Danny Boyle called his Slumdog Millionaire performance “beautiful to watch”, while the celebrated critic Roger Ebert noted his ‘subtle, engrossing work’ in The Namesake. He went on to deliver memorable performances in films such as The Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, The Mighty Heart and Jurassic World.
His last film was Angrezi Medium, ahead of which the actor had shared an empowering video message for his fans, stating that the only choice he had was to remain positive. “One doesn’t have any other choice but to remain positive. Whether you are able to make lemonade in such situations is entirely up to you. We’ve made this film with the same sort of positivity. I hope this film is able to make you laugh and cry in equal measure.”
In India, his most famous films include his debut, the Academy Award nominated Salaam Bombay!, Maqbool (2004), Paan Singh Tomar (2011), The Lunchbox (2013), Haider (2014), Gunday (2014), Piku (2015) and Talvar (2015) and Hindi Medium (2017).

Sunny Deol, Karisma Kapoor charged by Railways for pulling chain in 22-year-old case
Jaipur: A railway court has framed charges against Bollywood actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol and actress Karisma Kapoor more than 20 years after
they allegedly pulled the emergency chain of a train while shooting for a film.
The duo challenged the order in a sessions court on Wednesday, A K Jain, counsel of Kapoor and Deol, said.
The actors were accused of illegally pulling the chain of train 2413-A Uplink Express, which led to its delay by 25 minutes. The counsel said the charges were initially read out against both the actors in 2009, which they challenged in a sessions court in April 2010.
The session court exonerated both the actors, but on September 17, the railway court again framed the charges against the two, Jain said
Besides Deol and Kapoor, stuntman Tinu Verma and Satish Shah were also accused in the case but they had not challenged the charges against them in the sessions court in 2010. The railway court has scheduled the next hearing in the 1997 case on September 24.
Then assistant station master Sitaram Malakar of Narena had lodged a complaint at the General Railway Police, following which the actors were accused of violating Section 141 (needlessly interfering with the means of communication in a train), Section 145 (drunkenness or nuisance), Section 146 (obstructing a railway servant in his duties) and Section 147 (trespass and refusal to desist from trespass) of the Railways Act.
In 1997, Deol and Kapoor, along with other crew members, were shooting for film 'Bajrang' at Sanvarda village near Phulera in Ajmer district.

Unveiling of a blockbuster
The much-awaited trailer of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy was released on Wednesday, with producer Ram Charan and director Surender Reddy in attendance.
And even as the world awaits how the movie does in the box office, Ram Charan says he is not concerned about how much he has spent on the movie and how much he will make. “We wanted to tell the story of a person who started the first movement against the British. We’ve had this story with us for the last 10 years, and we finally made it now. It was my father’s wish to do this film,” he says. So was it easier to make this film now (and not 10 years ago) given the technology at hand, we ask. “Yes, if the film was made 10 years ago, our budget could have shot above Rs 500 crore, but now using the latest technology we’ve got the essence of the period drama and have managed to make it for Rs 200 crore. So from that perspective, the movie has been made at the right time,” says Surender Reddy.
Surender says he chose to make the film because Uyyalavada Narasimha Reddy’s life had enough commercial value in it, and then he goes on to compare Narasimha Reddy’s life with Chiranjeevi’s. “Chiranjeevi has also reached the top despite many struggles. I look at him and it gives me the strength I need to do this film,” says Surender Reddy.

Photos: Kangana Ranaut undergoes extensive prep for 'Thalaivi' in US
Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut is one actor who pays attention to every detail in the character she plays. Ever since it was announced that Kangana will be playing Jayalalithaa in a biopic on the superstar turned politician, there was a lot of interest around how the actor would look, especially in the older version.
The producer of the film, Vishnu Induri, has earlier revealed that renowned Hollywood artist, Jason Collins, who has worked on films like Blade Runner and Caption Marvel, will be working on Kangana's look in Thalaivi. Ms Ranaut flew to Los Angeles a few days ago for the same, and now, few pictures of her undergoing a transformation have been revealed.
Sister Rangoli Chandel shared the pictures on her Social Media where we can see Kangana Ranaut fully covered in prosthetic glue for her tests, which she must have kept for a long time for the team to have a set to check and work upon.
Tweeting, Rangoli explained the process & expressed how difficult it is to be an actor. She wrote, "This is how measurements for prosthetics are taken, it’s not easy to be an actor, Kangana so calm even in something which is so suffocating for us to even watch
Going by the pictures looks like Kangana is all set to step into the shoes of Iron lady Jayalalithaa. In the pictures, she can be seen undergoing extensive measurements for prosthetics. This will be in addition to Kangana learning Bharatnatyam and Tamil for Thalaivi. The film will go on floors post-Diwali near Mysore.
Looking after the preparation, we are sure fans are waiting to see Kangana's first look from the film. 'Thalaivi' is produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh and is a biopic based on the life of a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa
