India’s maritime ecosystem is evolving, but our latest research shows that progress is happening in silos. DG Shipping, MTIs, and RPSLs are each moving forward, yet without stronger coordination, the impact remains limited.

While 60 percent of women respondents join the cruise and passenger sector, only 40 percent enter cargo and technical pathways. This split highlights both opportunity and fragmentation in how maritime careers are accessed and understood.

This insight comes from our report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” conducted with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by Directorate General of Shipping, India.

Many women enter seafaring as cadets or junior officers, but very few advance to leadership roles. Our study shows that the real barrier is not entry, but progression. Positions such as Master, Chief Officer, and Chief Engineer remain filled by less than 1 to 2 percent of women. Meanwhile, a large share of women remain concentrated in hospitality or support roles.

This pattern highlights systemic challenges in career growth, mentorship, and placement opportunities for women at sea.

These insights are from our latest report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” conducted with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by Directorate General of Shipping, India.

Our research reveals a critical mismatch between compliance and inclusion. While 93 percent of RPSL companies are MLC certified, only 21 percent recruit women. Certification alone is not enough. True progress requires intentional hiring, career support, and a stronger commitment to gender inclusion.

This finding is part of our new report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” developed with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by Directorate General of Shipping, India.

The maritime sector is opening its doors to more women than ever before, yet our latest research reveals that systemic gaps continue to limit how far and how fast women can progress.

From low application rates to placement bottlenecks and limited female faculty, the challenges highlighted in our study show that while the sea is ready for women, the system still needs strengthening. These barriers affect training, mentorship, industry perception, and even access to opportunities, creating loops that slow down progress for aspiring women seafarers.

This insight comes from our report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” developed by Maritime SheEO with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by the Directorate General of Shipping, India.

The latest findings from our research reveal a powerful generational shift in India’s maritime workforce.

An overwhelming 94 percent of women seafarers today are first-generation mariners, meaning they are the first in their families to choose a career at sea. These women are not just entering the industry, they are redefining what is possible for future generations by breaking long-standing norms and opening doors that did not exist before.

This insight is part of our report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” conducted with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by the Directorate General of Shipping, India.

The caste and community profile of the seafaring women respondents from our latest research report shows a striking shift in who is entering India’s maritime workforce.

While 42% of respondents are from the General Category, more than half come from OBC, SC, and ST communities — a clear sign that access to maritime careers is widening beyond traditionally dominant groups. This growing diversity isn’t just a statistic; it reflects changing opportunities, shifting perceptions, and a more inclusive future for the industry.

This insight comes from our latest report, “Indian Women at Sea: A 2025 Study of States, Socio-Economics, and Shipping Pathways,” conducted with VR Maritime Services Private Limited (R&D Partner) and supported by Directorate General of Shipping, India.
