Director Vivek Agnihotri has directly appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the release of his upcoming film, The Bengal Files. In a video posted to his social media, Agnihotri expressed concern that exhibitors in the state are facing "political pressure" to not screen the film.
According to the filmmaker, the film's trailer launch in Kolkata was abruptly canceled, and he claims that multiple false FIRs have been filed against his team. He stated that theater owners are afraid to show the film, fearing "political turmoil" even if it's not officially banned.
What Vivek Agnihotri Said
In his appeal, Agnihotri made several key points:
Constitutional Duty: He reminded the Chief Minister of her constitutional oath to protect the freedom of speech for all citizens. Since his film has been passed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), he believes its release should be guaranteed without interference.
Film's Purpose: He clarified that The Bengal Files is not against any community. Instead, he said the film is a commentary on "those who acted against humanity" and aims to shed light on a painful, often-overlooked part of Indian history.
Historical Context: He highlighted the importance of his film in telling the story of the 1946 Direct Action Day and the Noakhali massacre, which he described as a "Hindu genocide." He argued that while the world knows about events like the N**i holocaust, the new generation of Indians is largely unaware of these historical events.
He concluded his emotional appeal by asking the CM not to ban the film but to watch it, understand it, and debate its contents, adding, "If you think beyond the political sphere, like a true Indian, a true Bengali, then you will not ban this film. you will salute it." The film is scheduled to release on September 5.
