ANDHRA KESARI — THE MAN WHO STOOD UNAFRAID 🇮🇳

On his birth anniversary, we remember Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu — a fearless patriot, distinguished lawyer, administrator and one of the towering leaders of Andhra.

Born on 23 August 1872 at Vinodarayunipalem near Ongole, Prakasam Pantulu rose from humble circumstances to become a successful lawyer, a freedom fighter and eventually the first Chief Minister of the newly formed Andhra State.

🇮🇳 THE COURAGE THAT CREATED “ANDHRA KESARI”

His name became immortal during the Simon Commission protests in Madras in 1928.

When armed British police threatened the demonstrators, Prakasam Pantulu stepped forward, bared his chest and challenged them to shoot.

That extraordinary act of courage earned him the title “Andhra Kesari” — The Lion of Andhra.

But his courage was not limited to one defining moment.

📜 FROM BARRISTER TO FREEDOM FIGHTER

After studying law in England and establishing a successful legal career, he gave up his lucrative practice in response to the call of the national movement.

He became deeply involved in the freedom struggle, endured imprisonment and also used journalism as a powerful instrument of public awakening. His newspaper Swarajya, founded in 1921, became an influential voice of the nationalist movement.

🏛️ A STATESMAN OF ANDHRA

Prakasam served as Premier of the Madras Presidency from 1946 to 1947 and later became the first Chief Minister of Andhra State on 1 October 1953, following the creation of the state on linguistic lines.

His contribution to public life included advocacy for the abolition of the Zamindari system, reflecting his concern for cultivators and social justice.

🌿 A LEGACY THAT STILL STANDS TALL

Tanguturi Prakasam passed away on 20 May 1957, but the spirit behind the title Andhra Kesari remains alive.

The Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh was named in his memory, preserving the name of a man who chose principle over comfort and courage over fear.

Some leaders are remembered for the offices they held.
Prakasam Pantulu is remembered for the courage with which he lived.

When the Flute Becomes a Voice of Tradition — Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar 🎶

Some musicians carry a musical legacy forward.

Today, we celebrate Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar, one of the distinguished voices of the Carnatic flute tradition, born on 23 August 1963 into the illustrious musical family of the Sikkil Sisters.

🌿 A Legacy Begun at Home

The daughter of legendary flautist Sikkil Neela, Mala Chandrasekar was introduced to the flute at a very young age. She received guidance from her mother and her aunt, Sikkil Kunjumani—the celebrated Sikkil Sisters who gave the Carnatic flute a distinctive place on the concert stage.

Her musical journey was not built overnight. Her progress was gradual, but dedicated training transformed an early interest into a remarkable artistic calling.

By her teenage years, she had begun appearing on prestigious platforms, and in 1980, she was selected by Doordarshan Kendra for the live programme Ilam Thendral. Her performances also brought her recognition through All India Radio.

On the birth anniversary of Asha Negi, we celebrate an actress whose warmth, natural charm and versatility have made her a cherished name in Indian television and beyond.

Born on 23 August 1989 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Asha first stepped towards the entertainment world after being crowned Miss Uttarakhand in 2009. She then moved to Mumbai, determined to build a career in acting.

🌸 The Journey

Her television journey began with Sapnon Se Bhare Naina, followed by appearances in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. But it was her portrayal of Purvi Deshmukh in Pavitra Rishta that made her a familiar face in countless Indian homes.

Asha subsequently explored different shades of performance through shows such as Kuch Toh Hai Tere Mere Darmiyaan, Ek Mutthi Aasmaan, Baarish and Abhay, proving that she was much more than a single memorable character.

And then there was KK — Krishnakumar Kunnath, whose voice quietly became the soundtrack of love, friendship, heartbreak, hope and countless unforgettable moments.

On his birth anniversary, 23 August, we remember a singer who left us far too soon, but whose music continues to live in millions of hearts. Born in Delhi on 23 August 1968, KK went on to become one of the most beloved voices of Indian cinema.

🎙️ A Journey Built on Passion

Before becoming a household name, KK sang thousands of advertising jingles and worked relentlessly to find his place in the music industry. His playback journey included Chhod Aaye Hum from Maachis, while Tadap Tadap Ke from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam announced the arrival of a remarkable voice.

Then came Pal — an album that gave an entire generation songs such as Pal and Yaaron.

From Aankhon Mein Teri and Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai to Khuda Jaane, Zindagi Do Pal Ki, Beete Lamhein and Tadap Tadap Ke — KK never merely sang a song. He gave emotions a voice.

❤️ The Legacy He Left Behind

KK passed away on 31 May 2022, aged 53, after performing at a concert in Kolkata.
