Making friends at 68 is nothing like making friends at 28. Here’s what actually works:

1. Proximity beats personality. Adults make friends through repeated, unplanned contact, the same faces, the same place, every week. That’s it. That’s the whole mechanism. Your parents aren’t shy, they just have nowhere to keep running into people.

2. Skip the ā€œgo socialiseā€ advice. Telling them to make friends puts the work on them. Putting them in a room where friendship is the byproduct of an activity does the work for them. Nobody bonds over small talk. They bond over doing something badly together and laughing about it.

3. Let them be a beginner at something. Learning in a group is the fastest shortcut to connection at any age; it gives people a shared reason to talk that isn’t their health or their children.

The part most families miss: your parents will resist the first two or three times.

That resistance is not disinterest, and if you read it as disinterest you’ll stop pushing right before it works.

There’s a specific way to handle it.

Comment what’s stopping you and we’ll tell you how to get past it.

Three things that actually move the needle: you can start this week.

1. Fix the day, not the intention. ā€œWe’ll take them out sometimeā€ never happens. A recurring slot on the calendar does. Loneliness breaks on routine, not on occasional visits.

2. Put them in a room with people their own age. Your company is love. It isn’t friendship. They need peers who remember the same decade they do.

3. Give the time a purpose. Art, music, movement, conversation with structure. Seniors don’t want to be entertained. They want to be involved.

There’s a fourth one and it’s the reason your parents keep saying, ā€œWe’re fine, don’t worry,ā€ when they’re clearly not.

Most families never get to it because they’re solving the wrong problem first.

Comment the exact thing you’re stuck on with your parents right now, whatever it is

and we’ll tell you what to actually do about it.

Knowing your parent is lonely and knowing what to do about it are two different problems. Most families are stuck on the second.

Four things we’ve learned running senior community sessions in Mumbai:

Fixed slot beats good idea. Same day, same people, every week. Friendship at 70 works like it did at 7 — repetition, not a great first meeting.

Remove the decision. ā€œDo you want to go?ā€ gets a no. Pre-book it, arrange the pickup. The energy to start is the first thing loneliness takes.

Give them a role, not a seat. People come back when they’re needed, not when they’re entertained.

Wait three sessions. First is awkward, second is polite, third they start using names. Most families quit at one and decide their parent ā€œisn’t a group person.ā€

Stuck on a specific version of this — a parent who refuses outright, one who recently lost a spouse, one who says they don’t like ā€œold people activitiesā€?

This is what happens when the TV stops being the whole day.

Not just background noise. Not just something to fill the silence. A reason to switch it off.

A session that actually needs their attention.
A conversation that isn’t scripted.
A Tuesday with something real in it, instead of another rerun.

Coming home with a story of their own, instead of one they watched happen to someone else.

Because it was never really about the TV. It was about not having anything better to look forward to.

At Happy2Age, this isn’t the exception. It’s how every day is.

Comfortable isn’t the goal.

Alive is.

Comfortable is a nice room, three meals, and a TV that’s always on.

Looking forward to something is different.

It’s Tuesday morning class with the friends they’ve made.

It’s a reason to get dressed up.

It’s a story they can’t wait to tell you.

You didn’t want your parent to just be taken care of.

You wanted them to actually want to get up in the morning.

That’s the difference between comfortable and alive — and it’s the difference Happy2Age is built around.

This is what ā€œstepping outā€ actually turns into.

Not just fresh air. Not just a change of scene. A reason to get dressed and show up.

A session to look forward to.
A face they’re excited to see again.
A Tuesday that suddenly has plans in it.

Coming home with something to talk about, instead of another day that blurred into the last one.

Because it was never really about stepping out. It was about having somewhere worth stepping out to.

At Happy2Age, this isn’t the exception. It’s how every day is.
