MLA Amin Patel and Corporator Javed Juneja, Join Arbaeen Walk from Najaf to Karbala

Congress MLA Amin Patel and corporator Javed Juneja are among the thousands of Mumbai residents participating in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, a nearly 90 km walk from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq. The Arbaeen, or ‘fortieth’ in Arabic, marks 40 days after Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala in 860 CE. Despite scorching daytime temperatures of 52°C, many pilgrims, including Patel and Juneja, prefer walking at night to reach Hussain’s mausoleum in Karbala.

“This is not just a physical walk. It has deep spiritual significance, honoring Imam Hussain, who sacrificed his life for justice, truth, and peace,” said Patel from Karbala on Wednesday. Patel and Juneja, along with others, completed the three-night journey from Najaf to Karbala, enduring significant hardships to show solidarity with Hussain’s legacy.

The Arbaeen walk, one of the largest public gatherings globally, symbolizes the commemoration of Imam Hussain’s stand against the Umayyad king Yazid. Many Indian pilgrims, including those from Mumbai, carry the national flag, as Arbaeen coincides with Independence Day on August 15.

NCP Sharad Pawar’s Youth Leader Kashif Shah’s Spirits Soar, Ward No. 223 Likely to go to NCP Sharad Pawar Group’s Quota

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are approaching soon, and out of the four wards in the Mumbadevi Assembly constituency, Ward 213 and Ward 216 are likely to be contested by Congress, Ward No. 223 may go to the NCP Sharad Pawar group under the Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance and Ward No. 220 is expected to be allocated to Shiv Sena UBT. Additionally, the connected wards in the Colaba Assembly constituency, Ward 221 and Ward 224, will be contested by Congress.

According to sources, a meeting of the Mahavikas Aghadi was held regarding the BMC elections, where NCP Sharad Pawar staked its claim on Ward 223, and Shiv Sena UBT claimed Ward 220 for contesting the elections.

For the past 30 years, Congress’s Gyanraj Nikam has been the Municipal Corporator for Ward No. 223. In 2017, due to the seat being reserved for women, his daughter Nikita Gyanraj Nikam became the corporator. However, there has been significant public dissatisfaction with Nikita Nikam, as she was reportedly absent during her five-year tenure, with zero public engagement and performance in the BMC House.

Sources indicate that the Nikam family has not been visible in the past five years, neither in MP Arvind Sawant’s election nor in MLA Amin Patel’s election, nor in Congress party meetings.

The NCP Sharad Pawar group has claimed Ward 223 and is pushing for its youth leader Kashif Shah as the candidate. Kashif is known for his strong public relations, popularity among the youth, and active involvement in addressing public issues, making him a dynamic and promising candidate.

It remains to be seen who will emerge as the Municipal Corporator from this ward in the upcoming elections and serve the people effectively.

The Mumbai Police has permitted the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to hold a peaceful protest at Azad Maidan against Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza. This decision follows a Bombay High Court bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad accepting the police's statement. Previously, police had denied permission, and an earlier petition was controversially dismissed by the court urging focus on domestic issues instead.
