Washington’s 100% Tariff Threat Risks Alienating Strategic Partners while Disrupting Global Markets
The passage of the *Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026* by an overwhelming 86–11 vote in the United States Senate marks a troubling escalation in Washington’s weaponization of global trade policy. Framed as a decisive measure to curb Russia’s energy revenues and honor the legacy of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, the bill hands President Donald Trump sweeping discretionary authority to levy tariffs of up to 100 per cent on exports from the top five importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas—explicitly putting India, alongside China, Azerbaijan, Hungary, and Slovakia, in the line of fire. While Capitol Hill portrays this as a moral ultimatum to force nations to choose between American trade and Russian oil, the legislation represents a heavy-handed, deeply flawed coercive maneuver that undermines strategic alliances, ignores global energy realities, and threatens American consumers.
