If anyone has dedicated their life so that the life & deeds of our revolutionaries, who gave their all for the freedom of our nation from the British rule, live on it has been Professor Malwinder Singh Waraich… He has made sure that through the books he has left behind the revolutionaries will not fade away into oblivion… He has documented various revolutionary movements spearheaded by different revolutionary parties - Ghadar party to Babbar Akalis to Hindustan Socialist Republican Association to Naujawan Bharat Sabha… He has done a yeoman’s service in this regard, documenting revolutionaries without any bias of caste or creed - Baba Sohan Singh Bakhna, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Ramprasad Bismil, Jatin Das, Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagwati Charan Vohra, Sukhdev and ofcourse Bhagat Singh… He has been one of the earliest as well as foremost voices and biographer of Bhagat Singh… Till his last breath he endeavoured to spread the word about these heroes and their sacrifices on the base of which India has been built… I was fortunate to not only meet him but also interview him for the documentary on Bhagat Singh and the revolutionary movement of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association… Here are some portraits I shot of Waraich Saab holding along his book, his work, his obsession, his homage to the revolutionaries… Thank you Waraich Saab for being a knight in shining armour for not only merely safeguarding but also passing on the glorious tales of our revolutionaries to the future generations… RIP

The great Raghu Rai’s work… books… pictures have left an indelible mark on India… on countless Indians… and one among the countless is me… I have learnt & imbibed so much from seeing his pictures… I haven’t been a trained cinematographer or a filmmaker but absorbing his pictures gave me a deep insight into the visual world of composition, aesthetics and authenticity… In fact when I began making my docu series on the many facets of India as well as on the Kashmir conflict, both of which are in final post production, his work was a point of reference - document the reality of India in all its simplicity and authenticity which in turn will convey its own complexity as well as beauty… Raghu Sir has been a great source of inspiration who has documented India through stills and in a way someone who paved the way for me to document the many spectrums of India through video… So he through his incredible body of work, pictures and books has been a guru to me… I had a chance meeting with him when he had dropped in one day at my apartment in Versova, maybe in 2005/2006, to shoot my former wife, Schauna, for an article of hers… I happened to open the door… In his trademark style he was carrying his one camera with him… Upon meeting me he instantly took some pictures of mine which unfortunately I didnt ever get to see… When I had done my photographic coffee table book ‘An Actor’s Inspiration’ I sent a copy to him and was overjoyed to receive his message praising the endeavour… this message for me means the world to me and is a treasure… Thanks a lot Sir for documenting India in all its authenticity, reality as well as glory and leaving behind those moving images for annals of history… You have chronicled India like no one has and through your work you will continue to live on for eternity… Your images will continue to move and inspire generations… Rip

Remembering Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar & Shivram Rajguru on their martyrdom day with gratitude… At about 7.15 pm on 23 March 1931 they were hanged for waging a war against the British empire… Majority mainstream narrative have portrayed Bhagat Singh as a gun-toting youth and painted him as a braveheart with a one dimensional brush… The fact is that he was much more than that… he was an intellectual giant, far far evolved for his age and had envisioned not just the end of British rule but also end to inequality & injustice in society… In reality he had fired the gun only once to kill that too to avenge the killing of Indian leader Lala Lajpat Rai by the hands of the British… As far as throwing bombs in the assembly are concerned, the bombs he threw were non lethal, meant only to symbolically send a loud message to the deaf British empire to wake up to peoples’ woes. He primarily fought the British while remaining imprisoned in the jail, through non violent means, using the media as a mouthpiece to connect with the masses of India and spread their message of freedom & justice… His and Batukeshwar Dutt’s hunger strike of 116 days showed the world the differential treatment being meted out to Indians not just in daily life but also inside the jail. It is this hunger strike that struck a chord with the nation and the people and made him popular… Also he used the platform of court proceedings to show to the world the hypocrisy of the justice system of the British empire… I have been really fortunate to have been privy to some newspaper reports with regard to them that haven’t been usually seen in the public domain, other than by research scholars & his biographers… The reportage shows the integrity, honesty, sacrifices and dedication towards the nation of his and his comrades… They were able to disseminate their truth through the media even when we were under the British rule… In today’s India no truth is allowed to be permitted to even come out… such has become our state that we were more free under the British rule than we are under this regime… (continued in comment section) …

TULLY SAAB

Long before satellite Tv and countless news channels came on the horizon it was BBC News that people relied on for accurate and trustworthy news during my growing up years in 1980s and early 1990s India… and the one who invariably delivered the happenings of the events on BBC was ‘Tully Saab’ who’s word was worth gold standard… so much so that he ended up becoming the ‘Voice of India’… His reportage was honest, integral and reliable… For a life devoted to bringing out truthful news and stories from India Sir Mark Tully’s legacy shines on… Journalists of today who have sold out and lost their scruples need to take a leaf out of his life, work as well as the way he went about gathering news in the most in-depth and integral manner… I had the privilege to witness his penchant for delivering information and story with an effortless ease when he took time out to give an interview to me for my docu series that tackles the Operation Bluestar which he had covered extensively… It was my absolute honour to be able to interact with him and record an interview face to face… Even in his old age when he was exhausted because of the long interview his dedication to his craft was so immaculate that he took another shot at a question and phrased as well as rephrased his answer so that he could give a wholesome, accurate account… It showed a deep quest of his to give it his all… Looking back at the fateful winter evening in Delhi when I got a chance to interview an icon of his time what has stayed with me apart from his persona is his generosity and humility. In spite of leaving behind his footprints in the story of India he was at the core a humble, down to earth soul… My regret though that I won’t be able to show him the finished docu and get his feedback as well as get to imbibe some more learnings from him… His handwritten note shall always be a treasured possession for me… So long Sir… Wish you a great journey in the afterlife. Truth has been strangled and caged here in today’s India atleast there you will illuminate all with it.

Here’s me beginning the new year by working on the life lessons from 2025: one of them being that no matter where you find yourself in life - up, down, all muddled up or being pulled in different directions - you still got to keep that smile of yours, enjoy the experience as well as the journey… ‘cause till the time you are not happy and do not have peace within you won’t be able to keep your loved ones happy… another one being that no matter what stage your life is passing through, you can’t postpone living your life in all its flavours and moments - in my case I can’t keep waiting for my project to finish and release and till then let other aspects of my life be on a pause button… have realised that life and its moments have to be lived and experienced through the chaos, clutter, grind, adversities, confusions, strife and all the ordeals thrown at you… am going to be working on these aspects amongst others to become a better version of myself… if this resonates with you then you too should inculcate this… Happy New Year to all of you… have a great 2026… 🌟🧿

On the great revolutionary Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary today we all Indians should seek forgiveness from him for the kind of India we have ended up making - corrupt to the core, communal, morally defunct, dictatorship without any accountability, power & wealth in the hands of a few, all pillars & institutions of democracy totally compromised and media made subservient… For Bhagat Singh freedom didn’t mean that the Britishers would leave and with a mere transfer of powers our very own people would take their place and continue to function in the same manner without any change whatsoever… Instead for him real freedom meant an overhaul of the entire system where the common people would have the power and a voice, where they would be justice, fairness and a sense of equality… Had he been alive to see the India that the politicians and us people have given shape to he and his fellow revolutionaries, who gave their life for their land, would have been terribly disheartened and heartbroken… He was given the title of ‘Shahid E Azam - The Martyr of Martyrs…’ In today’s India even ‘The Martyrs of Martyr’ would have been persecuted and termed anti Indian… anti national… Such is the state of India now and such are the times we live in…

100 YEARS OF KAKORI TRAIN ROBBERY

Exactly 100 years back, on 9 Aug 1925, 10 revolutionaries of Hindustan Republican Association led by Ram Prasad Bismil had boarded the 8 Down Saharanpur-Lucknow passenger train at Kakori, pulled the train over at a nearby place called Bajnagar and looted the money that British were transferring in it… With the Kakori action these revolutionaries threw an open challenge to the might of the British empire… This was the beginning of a new wave of revolution which forced even the Congress leaders to shift their stance from accepting dominion status from the British to giving a call for ‘Poorna Swaraj - Complete Independence’… Remembering these revolutionaries and saluting them for their valour as well as for the sacrifices & for the unbearable pain & hardships they all endured for their devotion towards their land… Unfortunately the kind of India that they had dreamt off and sacrificed their life for hasn’t been delivered by us people and more so by our political leaders… we have wasted the tremendous and valuable contribution of these great revolutionaries and proved that we didnt deserve even a tiny bit of what all they did… My homage & respect to all of them.

With folded hands I bow my head to one of the main force behind the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, the great revolutionary Bhagwati Charan Vohra on his martyrdom day... Instead of insatiable hunger for self publicity & power, if only our political leaders & head-honchos had an iota of selflessness that these revolutionaries had then that would have done a world of good for our country and for all its people.
