To Celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the foundation of MAPS (Maritime Awareness Program Society

MAPS (Maritime Awareness Program Society)

The earth is covered with two thirds water and therefore it is not surprising that more than 90% of the world’s goods are transported through water.

Isn’t it ironical then, that the consumer who takes for granted the supply of basic needs like food, , energy, clothes , electronic goods etc, is not aware of the role the shipping industry plays in getting these to him.

Unlike the trucks, trains, planes etc, ships are only seen either in movies of by people who live on the coast. Even then a few percentage of people exactly know how this industry is the very back bone of their survival. The awareness of this great and noble industry is not propagated and neither taught in elementary schools. But this industry works 24 hrs. a day, and 365 days a year, tirelessly. There are no Sundays or holidays on board a ship. Ship personnel do not go on strike... the world cannot afford it.

Lord Buddha said “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of this candle will not be shortened.

The Maritime Industry is one such single candle, giving light and life to numerous industries. It is what you might like to refer to as the Silent Mother.

Almost every industry’s survival and growth depends on this Silent Mother

Isn’t it time we gave this mother some credit and some appreciation ..?

This industry is also the most environment friendly means of transportation and is highly regulated. It was with the above thoughts the marine professionals in India created a society called the Maritime Awareness program Society or simply (MAPS). The only aim of this society is to promote the importance of the Maritime Industry to the common man and how it affects their everyday life. The founder members are Capt. Navin Passey, Capt. Sanjay Maini, Capt. K.S.Paintal. If you wish to join this campaign please feel free to interact with them.

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari, has laid the foundation stone for an Intermodal Terminal at Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh.
The Rs 155 Cr terminal is being constructed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India as part of the World Bank aided Jal Marg Vikas Project on river Ganga or the NW-I, that aims to augment the navigational capacity of the river.
The intermodal terminal at Ghazipur will have linkage to both NW-I or River Ganga and NH-31 which is just 650 metres away. NH19 links Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh with Patna in Bihar. The terminal will thus be very important for efficient movement of large and small cargo by providing the options for both land and water transportation or the option for intermodal switching. The terminal will have facilities like berths, storage areas and sheds, terminal building, communications systems and electrical substation. It will have a handling capacity of 12 lac tonnes per annum.
As part of IWAI’s efforts to promote environment friendly mode of transport, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering facility is also being planned at Ghazipur terminal. IWAI plans to run LNG fuelled vessels on NW1. The terminal is expected to provide between 5000 direct and indirect jobs. The first phase of the terminal construction is expected to be completed by April, 2020.
The intermodal terminal at Ghazipur is one of the several sub projects under the Rs 5369 Crore Jal Marg Vikas project. The other sub projects include construction of three multi modal terminals at Varanasi, Sahibganj and Haldia; a new navigational lock at Farakka, bank protection works, river navigation system, construction of Ro-Ro terminals and another intermodal terminals at Kalughat. IWAI is building this infrastructure along Ganga or NW-I to make the river navigable for cargo vessels. The development of this waterway would result in an environment friendly, fuel efficient and cost-effective alternative mode of transportation, especially for bulk goods, hazardous goods and over dimensional cargo. NW-1 is an important constituent of the Eastern Transport Corridor of India, along with the proposed Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and National Highway -2. This corridor connects the National Capital Region (NCR) with the eastern and north-eastern states, and will also be an important link to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal and other east and south-east Asian countries through the Kolkata Port and Indo- Bangladesh Protocol Route. Jal Marg Vikas project could therefore turn River Ganga into an economic lifeline for the region.

Larsen & Toubro Ltd. launched the second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) of a series of seven OPVs for the Indian Coast Guard at the company’s greenfield defence shipyard at Kattupalli, near Chennai. The OPV was formally lowered into the waters of the Bay of Bengal at the hands of Smt. Natarajan, wife of ADG K Natarajan, PTM, TM, COMCG (Western Seaboard) of the Indian Coast Guard. She named the OPV ‘CGS Vijaya’.
L&T is the first private Indian shipyard to construct and deliver OPVs for the Indian Coast Guard. L&T received the prestigious order valued at Rs 1432 Cr for design and construction of seven OPVs from the Ministry of Defence in March 2015. The first OPV was launched in Oct- 2017 and is presently undergoing trials. The launch of the second OPV, within three months from the launch of the first vessel and with overall completion of 85%, bears testimony to L&T’s proven project planning and ex*****on capabilities. These OPVs are long-range surface ships with helicopter operation capabilities, and their roles include coastal and offshore patrolling, policing maritime zones of India, control & surveillance, anti-smuggling & anti-piracy with limited wartime roles. The OPVs are approx. 97m long, 15m wide, has 3.6m draught, 2140 T displacement with a range of 5000 NM and can attain sustained speeds of up to 26 knots. The entire design and construction processes have undergone dual certification from the American Bureau of Shipping and Indian Register Of Shipping, and the project is being overseen by the Indian Coast Guard’s resident team at L & T Ship Building & Port Kattupalli shipyard.
L&T has achieved significant milestones in recent months in defence shipbuilding. In Dec 2017, L&T completed the delivery of all 36 nos. Interceptor Boats to the Indian Coast Guard contracted in March 2010, well ahead of contractual delivery schedule. The in-house designed and constructed Floating Dock-2 for the Indian Navy has been dispatched to Port Blair this month for final trials and handing over. This is the first time a Floating Dock has been designed and constructed indigenously. Commenting on the launch, Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, CEO & Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro, said: “It is heartening to see another ahead of schedule launch of a major defence vessel at the Kattupalli shipyard.
Delivery of all 36 Interceptor Boats under the first contract from the Indian Coast Guard ahead of schedule, timely dispatch of the Floating Dock-2 and timely completion of various refit orders from the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard speak volumes about L&T’s stellar delivery performance.
This stems from our deep-rooted ethos of nation-building and world-class ship design and fabrication capabilities. Today, we are amongst very few Indian shipyards that have the requisite capacity and financial strength to deliver complex defence vessels on time.” Mr. J.D. Patil, Senior Executive Vice President & Whole-time Director (Defence), Larsen & Toubro said: “Today’s launch of OPV-2 signifies the launch of the ninth defence vessel by L&T in the current financial year. L&T is achieving new benchmarks of ex*****on excellence with the construction of more defence vessels. With in-house capabilities to undertake ship design, in-house manufacturing of critical marine equipment, world-class shipyard infrastructure and robust financial strength, L&T is uniquely placed to fulfil the ambitious fleet expansion plans of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard”. “L&T is also looking forward to participate in ‘Medium Refit and Life Extension Certification’ of EKM submarines of the Indian Navy.
We will be deploying our rich expertise in the field of designengineering and construction of submarines for this project.” Mr. Patil added. “It is indeed a remarkable achievement to surpass the construction timelines in a multi-project ex*****on scenario,” said Vice Admiral B. Kannan (Retd.), MD & CEO, L&T Shipbuilding. “Largescale deployment of digital technologies in most shipyard operations including design, planning, production, project management and QA/QC has immensely helped in prioritizing the tasks and optimal deployment of resources.
Our rich pool of human resources is constantly innovating to enhance the productivity and has cut down cycle time,” he concluded. In addition, L&T is also progressing well on the Medium Refit (MR) of a Naval survey vessel at the Kattupalli shipyard. L&T undertakes repairs and refits of Naval and Coast Guard ships regularly and has till date completed repair/refit of four Naval ships and two Coast Guard ships.

BSN Network / Mumbai Date: 29/01/2018

The first ever DHL Global Trade Barometer, an early indicator of global trade developments calculated using Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and predictive analytics, assigned India the highest growth indices of the seven countries assessed, due to strong and sustained increases in both air and ocean freight in and out of the country. The country’s trade in machinery and high-tech goods continues to underpin its growth, while increased imports of industrial raw materials point to an extended period of trade development for the nation.
“More than any of the world’s largest economies, India’s major industries have displayed levels of resilience and growth that will buoy business confidence in the short to medium turn,” said George Lawson, Managing Director, DHL Global Forwarding India. “India’s economy has built up terrific momentum in recent times: since 2008, its GDP has risen every single year to US$2.44 trillion last year, more than double the levels of a decade ago. As the country continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, we expect it to continue its upward trajectory for the foreseeable future.”
According to the DHL Global Trade Barometer, businesses in India can expect ocean trade to further improve on already-high levels, largely thanks to demand for commodities and industrial materials from overseas. Air freight demand is projected to remain stable at its current highs, sustained by growth in machinery and technology imports. Both India’s air and ocean freight forecasts proved stronger than those of any other country in the Global Trade Barometer – in large part due to every major sector making a positive contribution to the country’s trade.
“We’re expecting strong performance in not just one or two sectors, but across the entire Indian economy,” said George Lawson.
“That implies two things:
Indian enterprises of all stripes are not only growing fast, but becoming more and more globally connected in how they do business.” He added that dynamic planning will become even more important. “Given this steep growth, it is critical that Indian exporters and importers alike partner with professional logistics providers to ensure their air and ocean demand is met with the right supply of capacity.”
Developed jointly by DHL and Accenture, the DHL Global Trade Barometer provides a quarterly outlook on future trade, taking into consideration the import and export data of seven large economies: China, South Korea, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Together, these countries account for 75 percent of world trade, making their aggregated data an effective bellwether for near-term predictions on global trade. The DHL Global Trade Barometer, which assesses commodities that serve as the basis for further industrial production, predicts that global trade will continue to grow in the next tthree months, despite slight losses in momentum.

Date: 29/01/2018

The Narendra Modi government decided last year to set an ambitious target to allow only electric cars in India by 2030.
To kickstart the electric-vehicle (RV) revolution in India, state-owned EESL - Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) decided to replace government vehicles that run on conventional fuels with EVs.
And Tesla is making waves.
How is shipping industry reacting to it?
The world’s first fully electric, emission-free and potentially crewless container barges are to operate from the ports of Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam from this summer.
The vessels, designed to fit beneath bridges as they transport their goods around the inland waterways of Belgium and the Netherlands, are expected to vastly reduce the use of diesel-powered trucks for moving freight.
Dubbed the “Tesla of the canals”, their electric motors will be driven by 20-foot batteries, charged on shore by the carbon-free energy provider Eneco.
The barges are designed to operate without any crew, although the vessels will be manned in their first period of operation as new infrastructure is erected around some of the busiest inland waterways in Europe.
In August, five barges - 52 metres long and 6.7m wide, and able to carry 24 20ft containers weighing up to 425 tonnes - will be in operation. They will be fitted with a power box giving them 15 hours of power. As there is no need for a traditional engine room, the boats have up to 8% extra space, according to their Dutch manufacturer, Port Liner.
About 23,000 trucks, mainly running on diesel, are expected to be removed from the roads as a result.
At a later date, six larger 110m-long barges, carrying 270 containers, will run on four battery boxes capable of providing 35 hours of autonomous driving. Their use alone could lead to a reduction of about 18,000 tonnes per year of CO2, it is claimed.
According to the latest statistics from Eurostat, 74.9% of freight in the EU is transported by road, compared to 18.4% by rail, and 6.7% along inland waterways, although the use of water routes has been rising.
The barges are being developed in the Netherlands with €7m in subsidies from the EU and additional funds from the ports involved. Port Liner believes it could produce about 500 barges a year to revolutionise the freight industry, although the electric motors and batteries could also be retrofitted into older boats.
The company’s chief executive, Ton van Meegen, told shipping industry trade journal the Loadstar that the barges would be the first in the world to sail on carbon-neutral batteries and that only the low bridges in the low countries prevented them from being loaded with more goods.
It is time to innovate and sustain.

Dr. Malini Shankar, IAS, Director General of Shipping, Chief Guest at WISTA India’s 5th anniversary, released the booklet ‘Gender Diversity’ at a function organized in Mumbai. Women's International Shipping and Trading Association International launched the book in cooperation with International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) and Anglo-Eastern Univan Ship Management Limited.
The book addresses critical social, cultural and interpersonal issues that can obstruct productivity of a shipboard team.More than a manual, the booklet aims to sensitize junior and senior officers to the challenges women seafarers may face. From sexual harassment and bullying to negative attitudes faced from male colleagues, it addresses a wide range of challenges reported by women seafarers.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Malini Shankar, commented, “Women want equality, respect for their capability and not privileges.” Sharing her personal experiences she narrated how a traffic inspector once remarked that most road accidents happen because of women. When she confronted the officer to provide the ratio of accidents due to women vs men as drivers, the officer was left speechless.
Sharing another incident of bias against women, she said,“ A woman Engineer was denied shipboard training citing the reason that it was not mandatory for women engineers.” However, this woman was provided shipboard training after Dr. Malini Shankar’s forceful intervention.
She concluded with remark that having a Mandatory course on Gender diversity for just ticking a box or a check list will not be useful. Instead it will require a lot of insight and structuring to make it more practical.
Ms. Despina Panayiotou Theodossiou, President, WISTA International, said, “WISTA India was founded in Mumbai in December 2012 – and it is going strong today. Tonight, we celebrate this wonderful accomplishment, as we look back upon the 5 years of the association, which are rich and dynamic. Many meetings, exemplary members, great initiatives, all these achievements and even more down the road, we are here today taking this opportunity not only to look back but also to look ahead. As the new President of WISTA International, I am incredibly proud of all our successes, our expansion globally but also the visibility we have gained in the shipping industry. We have created together, a dynamic global network supporting women in the maritime industry and our aim is to continuously highlight our important role. However, if women are to be fully included in the maritime industry, we should create a community of experienced women participating in various areas within our sector. What I see as part of our future, is WISTA becoming involved in the discussion on technology and innovation.
She complimented Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta, President, WISTA India, as a shining example of professional, positive, efficient leader in the maritime industry who was also kind and humble.
Capt Anoop Sharma, Chairman, Shipping Corporation of India, stated that SCI was always contributing to women’s welfare adding that Captain Radhika Mc Menon, was the first woman captain from SCI who was recently honoured by the President of India. He further added that 25 % of SCI directors are women and soon the SCI will declare the first woman Pilot.
Anil Singh, the brand ambassador of WISTA India, said vehemently that all organisations should come forward in support of women and give them opportunities for growth. He narrated incidents of how DPWorld whole heartedly supported its women staff in education and finance. He stressed on companies supporting the cause of gender diversity and WISTA without expecting anything in turn but gender diversity automatically reaps rewards.
Ms. Sanjam Gupta Sahi , President, WISTA India, Exco Member WISTA International, Executive Board Member World Maritime University, since 2016, informed the audience of working on ‘Diversity Charter’ with Natalie Shaw, Director Employment Affairs, International Chamber of Shipping and Karin Orsel, past President, WISTA International, as well as Trustee ISWAN.
She added the Seafarers handbook that was released was the first step, while the second one was to conduct Course on Gender Diversity adding, “It will be a huge milestone if we have this as a mandatory course.” She urged the industry to pledge support for more women in shore positions, especially management positions.
She concluded by saying, “Over the past 40 years, the employment of women in our industry has increased, both ashore and afloat, as has the number of women in top management and board positions. But there is still a long way to go in many regions of the world, and there is plenty of room for growth and opportunity. Let’s work together to cultivate women as candidates for inclusion everywhere in the best industry in the world!”
The WISTA members felicitated women for their great contribution and leadership including Mrs. H K Joshi, SCI, the first woman director (Finance), Ms. Sangeeta Sharma, for being the first woman director of liner services of a Public Sector Organization and Mrs. Saleha Shaikh Zubair, the MUI-WW Women’s Wing for contribution towards welfare of seafarers families.

Vote of Thanks was given by Ms. Sumi Sahi
A very interactive panel discussion on “Digital Disruption in Shipping: What happens Next?”was held as part of the celebrations, which had enthusiastic response from audience.
In 2020, there will be 4 billion connected people on the planet. They will be plugging into more than 25 billion apps and intelligent systems producing an eye watering 50 trillion GB of data. By next year, it is estimated that 70% of traffic on the internet will be video.
Clearly, this is not something the maritime industry can ignore – and in many ways shipping is perfect for digitalisation and disruption: it’s international, has a common language and a plethora of critical functions and processes that are time-consuming and labour intensive. Add to that a tech-savvy workforce increasingly expecting the same constant connectivity on board that they get at home and the way we are headed is obvious.
New, digital entrants are transforming traditional relationships in the freight and logistics business. Their offerings, built on big data, cloud and connected platform technologies, give customers the seamless experience they already enjoy as consumers: Ease of access, price transparency, swift, integrated service.
The distinguished panelists were Ms Liji Nowal, Managing Director, ODeX India Solutions Pvt Ltd; Ms Angie Hartmann, Starbulk [Greece]; Ms Angie Hartmann, Starbulk [Greece]; Ms Vinita Venkatesh, Director Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal and Managing Director, Mr Vivek Kele Director, Teamglobal; Capt. Vivek Singh Anand, Director; Mr. Vardharajan, Transworld, Executive Director and CEO, Shreyas Relay Systems; Mr Raghavandra Prasad, CEO, Winfin Technologies
Salient points discussed by the panelists included: Ground breaking collaborations for gaining control on supply chains, Potential of digital innovation: How to embrace and survive? How early adopters are making the first moves to take advantage of this; How business models will change and evolve?
The WISTA members were highly jubilant. The most touching gesture was, men giving nonstop applaud for WISTA members’ contribution to the industry.
