I’ve been braiding hair for most of my life, but I’ve never really told the story of how it all started.
It began in Cameroon, where my hair was shaved for school. At 10, I started learning to braid in my aunt’s salon. Years later, braiding became a side hustle, then a way to make money between jobs, then content that grew into a community of more than half a million people across social platforms.
And eventually, after learning to code, I turned all of those years of experience into BraidsTribeApp—a platform created to help Black women learn to care for their hair, become more self-reliant, save money, learn to braid, and preserve the knowledge that has traditionally been passed from woman to woman.
What I didn’t realize while I was living through all those chapters was that braiding was the thread connecting them all.
