The Inspirational Story of Judge Washington
Once, in his early years before becoming the first President of the United States, George Washington was serving as a judge in Virginia. Known for his honesty and strong moral compass, he became a symbol of justice for the people.
One day, a poor farmer was brought before Judge Washington. The man was accused of stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving children. He did not deny the charge. With tears in his eyes, he said,
"My family was hungry, and I had no work or money. I had no other choice."
The courtroom fell silent. Everyone expected punishment, for stealing was a crime, regardless of the reason.
Judge Washington looked at the man and calmly said:
"The law must be respected. I cannot let theft go unpunished."
He fined the man $10 — a heavy amount in those days.
The man bowed his head in shame. But what Judge Washington did next shocked everyone.
He took $10 from his own pocket, paid the fine himself, and then turned to the people in the courtroom.
He said:
"I also fine everyone in this room 50 cents — for living in a city where a man has to steal to feed his family."
Every person in the room quietly contributed. That day, the poor man walked away not only free — but with more than $50 in hand, enough to buy food and survive with dignity.
