The Chimbai Velankanni Community came together in a vibrant display of faith and unity on 31st August, celebrating 34 years since the installation of the statue of Our Lady of Good Health in Chimbai village.

This year’s procession witnessed the participation of over 500 devotees—young and old—clad in blue, symbolizing their devotion to Mother Mary. The procession began at the Velankanni grotto in Chimbai and wound its way through St. Joseph’s Road and St. Paul’s Road, before returning to the grotto. Along the route, both men and women, young and elderly, took turns carrying the Velankanni palkhi, highlighting the community’s collective spirit.

In a touching moment, devotees—including elderly participants with wheelchair—were seen venerating the Velankanni statue by passing reverently underneath the palkhi. The evening rituals continued with the flag hoisting ceremony and the recitation of the rosary, reinforcing the community’s deep-rooted faith.

The celebration concluded with the distribution of prasad, a gesture of sharing and fellowship that brought the evening to a close on a note of gratitude and togetherness.

In its 33rd year, the Jolly Boys Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal at Bandra Reclamation welcomed Lord Ganesha with devotion and a message of awareness.

For the past 8 years, the mandal has celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly manner, installing idols made of paper mache, natural components, and organic colors. This year, their theme is “Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities & Challenges”, highlighting how AI is shaping society, its pros and cons, and the career opportunities it offers to the youth.

Along with daily pujas and aarti, the mandal has organized cultural programs, music, dance, and interactive activities for devotees of all age groups. The festivities will conclude with the Ganpati Visarjan on 2nd September.

Devotees who brought Ganpati idols below 6 feet for their 1.5-day visarjan at the Bandstand immersion site were not allowed to perform the ritual.

As per Bombay High Court directives, idols up to 6 feet — whether made of clay or Plaster of Paris (PoP) — must be immersed only in artificial ponds and not in natural water bodies. Idols taller than 6 feet are subject to special judicial and municipal restrictions and are permitted only at designated visarjan locations.

The Bandstand Visarjan Mandal, which has been conducting immersions here for over 35–40 years, confirmed that the BMC and Mumbai Police are allowing only idols above 6 feet at the site.

Devotees unaware of this rule were left heartbroken and redirected to the artificial pond at the BMC ground near Mount Mary Steps.

Locals from Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz have urged the authorities to bring more clarity to these new rules, as many devotees were left disappointed during the festive season.

A rare glimpse of Bandora Point — what we today call Bandra. This photograph, likely taken from the iconic Bandra Fort (Castella de Aguada), shows the coastline as it looked over a century ago.

Once a sleepy fishing village lined with coconut trees and Portuguese watchtowers, Bandra has now transformed into the bustling “Queen of the Suburbs.” Yet, places like Bandra Fort still hold whispers of its past.

From Bandora to Bandra — this picture is living history!

A young girl was seen begging with a tiny puppy in her arms at the busy S.V. Road signal in Bandra, on Thursday. The helpless puppy was being manhandled and used as a prop to draw sympathy from passersby, while the child herself appeared vulnerable and exploited.

Such incidents highlight the grim reality of child exploitation and animal abuse at city signals. We urge Mumbai Police to take strict action and ensure such exploitation is stopped.
