The Bombay High Court has permitted Western Railway to continue its demolition drive at Garib Nagar in Bandra East, while directing authorities to protect residents declared eligible for rehabilitation in the 2021 surveys.

The order was passed on April 29 by Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Kamal R Khata while hearing a plea filed by the Garib Nagar Rahiwasi Welfare Sangh Society.

Residents alleged that despite an earlier March 18 interim order restraining demolition of certain structures, authorities demolished homes belonging to eligible Project Affected Persons (PAPs). The petition further claimed officials fenced parts of the site and removed belongings during the drive.

Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Rajesh Khobragade argued that families already recognised for rehabilitation were displaced without due process.

While allowing the Railways to proceed against unauthorised structures, the High Court clarified that residents identified as eligible in the August 10 and 11, 2021 surveys must have their interests protected.

Counsel for Western Railway told the court that earlier demolition attempts had allegedly been obstructed using “human shields,” following which authorities sought permission to continue the drive. The Railways also stated that eligible PAPs would be rehabilitated by MMRDA.

The matter will next be heard on July 8.

A 20-year-old Bandra resident was allegedly assaulted, robbed and forced to transfer money during a two-hour ordeal across Mumbai after meeting a man he connected with on dating app “Walla” on May 5.

Police said the victim met 19-year-old Mohammad Rizwan Sheikh near Bandra Talao around 6 pm after days of chatting on the app. Rizwan allegedly arrived on a black Suzuki Burgman scooter and took the victim through SV Road, Khar, Bandstand and Carter Road, where 22-year-old Mohammad Ali Qureshi later joined them near Mari Aai Mata Temple.

Near the Carter Road dog park, the situation allegedly turned violent. The accused allegedly abused the victim, snatched his phone and forced him to reveal his PhonePe password before taking him to Dockyard Road, where Rs 18,000 was transferred through a QR code at a mobile accessories shop. Police said the victim was assaulted again after refusing to share the password.

Before approaching police, the victim noted the scooter number — MH-02-GM-1363. Using CCTV footage, technical analysis and vehicle registration details, Bandra police traced and detained both accused from Juhu Beach within three hours of the FIR being registered.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Senior PI Ravindra Salunkhe and DCP Diksh*t Gedam by PI Ajay Lingnurkar, API Vijay Achrekar, PSI Suraj Irkate and team.

A 78-year-old woman’s murder in Bandra East was solved within 24 hours, with police arresting the accused from Thane.

Saubhagyamma Kathimyunar, a resident of Dharavi, was found unconscious on a footpath near an RNA building on April 27 and declared dead at Sion Hospital. Initially registered as an accidental death, the case turned into murder after the post-mortem confirmed strangulation and a blunt-force assault under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

CCTV footage led police to 44-year-old Bhanudas Vitthal Kamble, who was arrested from Thane. The crime took place on the night of April 26, when the accused, in Bandra for a function, attacked the woman with a brick after she objected to him urinating roadside, and then strangled her when she continued shouting.

He later fled but was traced through CCTV and local inputs, and is now in police custody after confessing.

A lost laptop near Bandra Railway Station on May 4 was swiftly traced back to its owner, thanks to the sharp presence of mind of Bandra Police.

After recovering an unattended bag, officers found photos of a Jain Sadhu from a religious ceremony. Recognising a key lead, they immediately circulated the images within Jain community networks, which quickly reached a Jainik Legal Cell member.

In no time, the monk was identified, the owner traced, and connected to Constable Mayur Ghadghe for a seamless handover.

Kudos to Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Salunkhe, API Pawar, and team — PC Ghadghe, PC Rakte, and PC Kazi — for their swift and efficient coordination.

Efficient, alert, and dependable — Mumbai Police at its best.

Bandra Buzz stepped into Udyog Sakhee – Grand Consumer Market Place and got a real, on-ground look at what’s actually worth your time this weekend.

Running 1st, 2nd and 3rd May 2026, from 11 AM to 9 PM, at Sant Sena Nabhik Samaj Hall, Vitthal Mandir, Opp. Bandra Talao, S.V. Road, Bandra (West)—this three-day showcase brings together women entrepreneurs from across Mumbai, all under one roof.

We captured 10 standout stalls, and what comes through is clear—this isn’t filler, it’s functional. Sarees that carry weight, co-ord sets and menswear that feel current, and essentials that go back to basics—wood-pressed oils, masalas, grains and millets done right. And in peak season form—Devgad organic mangoes that don’t need a sales pitch.

What makes this different is intent. Every stall here represents a business being built, not a table being filled.

If you’re in Bandra, this isn’t optional browsing. It’s a walk-through that delivers.

Mumbai’s original communities are on display right now.

The East Indian Food Festival 2026 is underway, bringing together the culinary traditions of the East Indian Samaj — Kulbis, Bhandaris, Kolis and Agris — a culture that has travelled across the world, yet remains rooted in the city it began in.

Live at St. Andrew’s Quadrangle till 10pm, the space is lined with food that rarely leaves community homes — served, judged, and celebrated in its most authentic form.

Stalls are competing for the best-decorated and most presentable East Indian showcase, while the evening carries on with performances in the East Indian dialect, housie, and spot prizes.

Free entry. Limited hours left.

If you’re in Bandra and not here yet, you’re missing the real thing.
