Reflection:
Desire is the trap that ensures transmigration. If one's desires remain even after death, transmigration is certain.

But if one's desires die while one is still alive, moksha is certain. Such a soul awakens its innate qualities of sat {eternity}, cit {awareness} and ānanda {bliss}.

What does India mean?
Thrashed the enemy in his den!
What does Pakistan mean?
Who cares!

Reflection
All life is sacred. Every life matters.

Indian lives matter. Pakistani lives also matter.

But when you become a terrorist and start mass murdering innocents, you cease to be a human being. Your life is forfeit.

Pakistan has waged a violent, vicious and pointless war against India for the past seven decades. India has been the picture of calm and restraint. We have seen thousands of our brave soldiers and innocent countrymen lose their lives. Time after time, India and the entire international community has warned off Pakistan. But to no avail.

Nothing changes within Pakistan. Prime Ministers come and go. Democracies come and go. The absolute rule of the Pakistan Army and the ISI continues.

The great difference between India and Pakistan is that after the British left, India discontinued zamindari and grew out of its feudal past. Pakistan is firmly entrenched in the feudal system. The feudal pyramid is in place, with the Pakistan Army and ISI at the top and the common people of Pakistan at the bottom.

The masses in Pakistan have no freedom whatsoever. They were exploited by the British in the colonial era, and are now at the mercy of their own Armed Forces and the terrorists fostered by them.

No Pakistan PM has any real power. Certainly not the current incumbent. He does and says what he is told to. He has no say in how his country is run. The unfortunate reality is that his masters, the Pakistan Army and the ISI do not wish to end their ongoing war with India.

India believes in peace. We do not seek war.

No one wants war. It is always the last option. But sometimes, all other options run out and war becomes inevitable.

As a patriotic Indian, I want to see India win.

One by one, true followers of Islam have left the mosques
Terrorists and radicals now control Islam

Reflection
Unfortunate events in the 20th and 21st centuries, post the fall of the Usman (aka Ottoman) empire, have placed millions of followers of Islam in a difficult position. A tiny section of the followers of Islam have taken to the path of terrorism. But it has given the entire community a bad name.

I firmly believe that no religion should be blamed for the acts of its followers. I am very proud to be a Jain. But is my conduct in line with the teachings of Lord Mahavira? No. But the fault lies with me, not with the teachings of Lord Mahavira.

Similarly, if a number of Muslims have taken it upon themselves to violently impose an extremely radical Wahhabi/Salafist view of Islam on the rest of the world, one should not blame Prophet Mohammed. Nor should one blame the vast majority of the followers of Islam, who do
not support the terrorist activities of the Daesh and other outfits.

This is why the poet has written that Islam is now ruled by radicals and terrorists. The true followers of Islam are no longer in a position of influence.

It is imperative that one does not confuse Radical Islam with Moderate Islam.

Radical Islam with its doctrines of intolerance and violence is causing problems all over the world. Not the Moderate Islam that is followed by the majority of Muslims all over the world.

I equate Radical Islam with the kind of propaganda that Hi**er and Göbbels were churning out. Should we blame the average German or Austrian for the actions of Hi**er and his henchmen? Since we don't, why should we blame the moderate Muslim for the actions of the radicals?

I am very proud to be an Indian. India is a secular, sovereign democracy where each person has a right to speak his mind and practice his religious and cultural beliefs.

For thousands of years, India has embraced all those who have come to her. This is why we have so many religions, philosophies, ways of life, cultures and subcultures. India welcomes diversity.

No other nation in the world can display such variation of language, lifestyles, religions and cultures as India. This diversity is underpinned by a secular and broad-minded outlook that stems from an acceptance of different views as being equally valid. We are extremely
fortunate to have a strong and well written constitution that has helped us grow as a nation.

I hope and pray that India remains a tolerant and open-minded nation and continues to be inspired by the teachings of Mahavira, Buddha, Kabir, Ambedkar, Gandhi and Vinoba.

As long as we keep giving birth and space to writers and poets of the calibre of Munshi Premchand and Nida Fazli, our nation is in good hands.

A nation is strong when its intelligentsia is free to express its views. The litmus test of a democracy is whether the common man can criticise those who rule the nation. Freedom of expression, and freedom of disagreement are essential for the intellectual life of a nation.

Imposing our beliefs, thoughts and views on others has never been the Indian way. I hope we do not change our ways and remain a haven for free thought and liberalism.

Using unequalled words
In order to expand my own understanding and wisdom

*अथाधुनैकदाकाले पार्श्वप्रज्ञालये गतः*
*श्रीपार्श्वमुखामलोक्य स्वान्तातत्छ्हब्दः परिस्फुटः* {८}

I just visited the Parshvaprajnalaya Temple
Upon seeing your adorable visage there
These words have emerged from my soul

*विनयी मे लघुभ्राता गुरुचरणकिङ्करः*
*नाम्ना सः कलशः ख्यातः तदर्थं निर्मिता कृतिः* {९}

I have composed this hymn for
My respectful younger brother Kalash
Who is completely devoted to his guru

*प्रातर्मध्याह्ननिशायां भया तु चिन्तितं सदा*
*मदैकाकित्व नाशाय भविष्यति प्रभो मम* {१०}

Whether morning, afternoon or evening
I contemplate on the same thing
Will my lord rescue me from my loneliness

*गुरुगणधरान् ध्यात्वाऽऽध्यात्मधर्मोपदेशकान्*
*क्षेमरत्नप्रणीतोऽयं पार्श्वनाथगुणस्तवः* {११}

Inspired by the Ganadharas,
Who gave sermons on the dharma of the soul,
Muni Kshemaratna has composed this
Hymn to Lord Parshvanatha’s Qualities

mujh ko nafrat se sakht nafrat hai
pyaar ko dil se pyaar kartaa huun
~ Maahir Balgiraami

I loathe hatred,
And I love love with all my heart.

Reflection
The above couplet describes me perfectly.

By not allowing narratives that run contrary to one's own values, isn't one negating liberalism? What then, should be the liberal’s take on terrorism?

Especially when his own country is under attack?

Should terrorists be hated?

Can liberal ideology accept intolerance and fanaticism as valid viewpoints? After all, liberalism holds that each person has a right to practice and profess his beliefs.

I consider myself a liberal but I loathe terrorists and those who radicalise them. I love my motherland deeply and all those who endanger her peace and progress are my enemies.

tuu khudaa hai na miraa ishq farishton jaisaa
donon insaan hain to kyun itne hijaabon mein milein
~ Ahmad Faraz

Neither are you god nor do I love you like an angel
Both of us are humans so why these veils between us

Reflection
We are all equal. Barriers are created by society.

Why create hierarchies based on race, gender, faith, caste or dietary habits? Why suppress anyone's ability? Why compel people to make choices to please others?

Everyone has the right to lead their own lives as they see fit, as long as they do not break the law. We should be free to do that without hurdles created by others. Freedom is more precious than all the gold in the world.

SAMAYASARA

http://www.navelgazing.net/2018/12/samayasara-various-translations.html

Acarya Kundakunda's Samayasara occupies a premier place in the affection of Jains and enjoys the respect of devotees and scholars alike as one of the most important philosophical and metaphysical texts of Jainism. Its demarcation of Jain doctrine into niscaya naya {absolute viewpoint} and vyavahara naya {practical viewpoint} has played a seminal role in our understanding of the Jina’s teachings.

What can one say of the Samayasara that is not already known to the rest of the world? Written in order to explain that the soul and body are different, and that the soul is eternal while the body is mutable, the Samayasara is the acme of Jain writings. It explains the Jain doctrine in succinct Prakrit verse. This unparalleled work is capable of changing our thoughts and thus the direction of our lives. Those who internalise its teachings and walk in the footsteps of the Jinas shall certainly attain emancipation.

Translations and commentaries on the Samayasara are found in languages as diverse as Sanskrit, Dhundhari, Old Hindi, Modern Standard Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, English and Gujarati. Each translator has brought out new facets of this many-splendoured text.
