For decades, cricket commentary has described field settings based on vibe and tradition. We’ve described it well, but we’ve struggled to measure it objectively Until now.
In collaboration with Quidich Innovation Labs and published in Sage Journals, we are proud to share a breakthrough study that identifies the “vocabulary” of elite cricket.
The Key Findings: 🔹 The Big 21: Despite the game’s complexity, elite teams rely on just 21 repeatable field settings. 🔹 The Vocabulary: This gives analysts and broadcasters a standardized way to compare teams and tell stories. 🔹 The Surprise: Statistical analysis showed no direct link between specific field settings and wicket-taking. 🔹 The Reality: While they might not predict wickets, field settings are the primary driver of dot balls, boundaries, and run-scoring pressure.
This research bridges the gap between live match reality and computer vision tracking. It proves that fielding is no longer subjective—it is measurable, evidence-based, and repeatable.
