The United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award was created in 2016 by the UN Department of Peace Operations. It is not a diversity award in the corporate sense; it recognizes officers who improve the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping missions by building trust with local populations, gathering community-level information, improving civilian protection, and increasing participation of women in peace and security initiatives. The winner is selected from nominations submitted by UN peacekeeping missions involving personnel from over 120 troop-contributing countries, making it a competitive international award rather than an automatic recognition. India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations globally.

The Passing Out Parade at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) in Nashik became a talking point after Captain Bharat Bhardwaj proposed to his longtime partner following the ceremony. While many viewed the gesture as heartfelt and memorable, others criticized it as inappropriate for a military institution rooted in discipline and tradition. As of now, there is no public indication that the Indian Army has treated the act as a violation of official rules, making the debate more about personal views on decorum than confirmed misconduct. It was a brief, harmless celebration after the formal proceedings had concluded indicating that the proposal took place after he received his aviation wings and the ceremony had effectively ended.

As for “official rules,” the Indian Army’s discipline framework is governed by the Army Act, 1950 and the Army Rules, 1954. There is no publicly known rule that specifically prohibits a marriage proposal at a passing-out parade. However, military establishments also operate under standing orders, local instructions, and commanders’ directions that are often not public. If the proposal had been carried out without permission in a restricted area, disrupted the ceremony, misused official resources, or violated a specific local order, then administrative action could theoretically be taken. But based on the publicly reported facts alone, there is no indication that the Army has alleged misconduct or announced any disciplinary action.
