The People Place Project A research and publication initiative committed to create more consciousness about built environment. People Called Mumbai is compilation of many such accounts!

About The People Place Project:
The People Place Project is an initiative to chronicle the life and times we live in. Through a lens of people and places, we hope to pin together the narrative of how we have come to be here - our language, our thoughts, our attire, our structures - everything that defines us. The Project will travel through cities of the world to unravel fresh individual narrative

s that add to the whole. Started in 2014 under the title People Called Mumbai, the project now aims to travel across the prime cities of India and the globe. About People Called Mumbai

What makes Mumbai ‘Mumbai’, is its people. Every person here has a story in his own - but their story is not theirs alone. Many a time, it belongs to a collective narrative, falling into compartments of the city's history. It is in this context, we conducted a publication project - People Called Mumbai. Begun as a summer workshop, the project has blossomed into a narrative of how this city was weaved by narratives of people born here and those that made her their home. A photographer at Juhu Chowpatty who doubles up as a life guard, a businessman dealing with beads in Bhuleshwar who came to the city to fulfill his dreams, a stranded tourist now riding horse carriages, a Bollywood ‘duplicate’, a migrant who runs the city’s only Tibetian restaurant and many more - they bring alive Mumbai. We often zoom past people, landmarks, places, with a little thought to what they hold within.

Talk at
About using writing can be a tool to 'make visible' lesser known/ invisibilised heritage.
The talk goes through various possibilities and forms of writing - from maps, to guidebooks to illustrated books that weave in fiction and art; to posing questions:
- What counts as heritage?
- Who has a seat at the table when defining it?
- How can writing reshape urban belonging?
Arguing writing (or engaging) with heritage is deeply political!

You can now catch up with talk online on Khaki Labs YouTube!
