What do you think? As a wildlife enthusiast, an EV owner, a climate researcher, an architect, a voter and a citizen of India — what are your thoughts on the BJP manifesto’s plans for climate action? With the Supreme Court recently recognising the right against the adverse effects of climate change as a fundamental human right, is this enough? Tell us in the comments.

As the climate crisis continues to worsen, we look at the climate action plans of those competing for power in the 2024 elections, in this case the Bharatiya Janata Party ().

Water crises, heat waves, rapid urbanisation, air pollution, natural disasters — so much of what’s in the news ties back, in some way or the other, to the ongoing climate crisis. Ahead of the upcoming General Elections, we were curious about the climate action plans proposed by the major political parties contesting. We also asked experts who work in these fields for their thoughts: Are these plans sufficient? Do they cover our most pressing climate issues? Are they missing key points that need addressing?

As of the time of this post going live, only the Indian National Congress’ () manifesto has been published. Scroll through for a summary of points in the manifesto that pertain to climate action, and comments from experts like architects Alan Abraham () and Samarth Das (); environmental lawyer Meenaz Kakalia (); Tanmay Takle (), a board member at Student Energy (); Shaunak Modi (), co-founder of Coastal Conservation Foundation (); and Dr Ashwin Mahalingam, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras () and co-founder of Okapi Research and Advisory ().

Food loss and waste is responsible for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Out of the total food wasted in 2022, 60% happened at the household level, with food services responsible for 28%, and retail 12%, according to the UN’s Food Waste Index Report 2024. In Mumbai, over 72% of solid waste is attributed to food.

Food loss happens at the farm, in storage and in transit. Food waste at shops or home. On this day of zero waste, we urge you to consider how we can participate in the cause to reduce food waste.

Do share and help us discover regional or local zero-waste initiatives in your cities and their contribution to achieving sustainable development.
