A new Indian superhero is here
RESEARCH: Superheroes give wings to the imagination and confidence of children. Children feel more empowered when they hear stories of superheroes. Also, superhero stories are a proven method of engaging children to deliver a message - Often, the problems that seem very difficult, can be solved if we believe in ourselves.
PROBLEM: Most superheroes that Indian children read about are male superheroes. Girl superheroes are missing!
SOLUTION: Dabung Girl has been launched as an initiative to break gender stereotypes and sensitive boys. ‘Dabung Girl’ (Fearless Girl) inspires children to solve challenges with wit and positivity. The target audience is children from 6 to 14 years of age.
FORM: Our team has been conducting life skills workshops with children over the last few years across multiple states in India. During these workshops, we continuously realized that children learn best when they get to learn in an entertaining way, in their own space, at their own pace. Hence, Dabung Girl has been launched as a comic book and will be gradually a part of an animation series too.
DIFFERENT? The central theme is around a girl superhero (Dabung Girl) who has an elastic body as her superpower. However, unlike other superheroes, who come and save the day, she helps children find solutions on their own. This superhero is a positive effort to enhance the child’s confidence, increase their awareness of social issues and inspire them to participate in social change. Imagination, creativity, and fun surrounds the character.
FIRST EDITION: The initial knowledge areas are aligned with United National Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The idea is to take on the social themes and build them into informative entertaining stories. The first comic covers two stories; one is about gender equality and the second is about the importance of saving the environment. The idea is to present an entertaining and positive story to the children of today, one that they can emulate to realize that success is available to everyone irrespective of gender. The content is being designed by leveraging research from Harvard University.
READ: The kindle version is available here for quick reference:
TEAM: This initiative is being led by Saurabh Agarwal who has been working in social sector for many years. He is a Harvard and IIT Alum and has worked in consulting with PwC, Deloitte, and The World Bank.
