The market is shifting from cost to lifecycle value: Aaron Ravenscroft

That shift is clearly visible in how tower cranes are being designed, manufactured, and deployed in India today.

Aaron Ravenscroft, President and CEO of The Manitowoc Company, explains how the new Potain MCT 105 reflects this transition.

With projects becoming larger, taller, and more complex, the focus is no longer just on upfront cost. Instead, customers are prioritising:

✔️ Higher lifting performance in compact spaces
✔️ Faster mobilisation and reduced logistics complexity
✔️ Lower downtime through strong aftermarket support
✔️ Long-term durability and higher residual value

Manufactured in Pune under the “Make in India” approach, the MCT 105 combines global engineering expertise with local market requirements—delivering efficiency in congested urban job sites while improving overall project timelines.

With initiatives like remanufacturing through EnCORE and a strong focus on lifecycle economics, the industry is steadily moving toward sustainable, value-driven decision-making.

Rent, Don’t Own: A Growing Shift in Construction Equipment Strategy

Is it smarter to rent construction equipment instead of owning it?

The construction industry is gradually shifting from owning heavy equipment to renting it, driven by cost efficiency, flexibility and operational convenience.

In many cases, renting equipment allows contractors to avoid heavy capital investment, reduce maintenance responsibilities, and access the latest technology when needed. For instance, some projects have found rental solutions significantly cheaper than purchasing equipment outright, while also eliminating operational and compliance challenges.

From excavators and cranes to boom pumps, rental packages increasingly include operators, maintenance support and logistics, enabling contractors to focus on their core construction activities while rental companies manage equipment performance and upkeep.

As infrastructure projects grow larger and timelines become tighter, the “Rent vs Own” debate is tilting towards rentals, helping companies optimise costs, improve efficiency and stay agile.
