Every year on 31st May, the Church of St. Andrew, Bandra, joyfully celebrates the Crowning of Mary, Queen of May. A cherished tradition that brings parishioners together in prayer, devotion, and gratitude.

The custom of honouring Mary during the month of May dates back centuries. In the Catholic tradition, May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a month of special devotion.

The crowning ceremony is a beautiful expression of this devotion. A crown of flowers or gold is placed on the statue of Mary, recognising her as the Queen of Heaven and Earth, not as a queen of worldly power, but as a loving mother who continually intercedes for her children.

At St. Andrew Church, the annual Crowning of Mary on 31st May is a moment of deep spiritual significance. Parishioners gather in large numbers to honour Our Lady with the rosary, hymns, and a solemn procession, entrusting their families, intentions, and hopes to her maternal care. For many, it is also a nostalgic and deeply personal tradition, recalling childhood memories of offering flowers to Mary and participating in May devotions.

Project Hail Mary may appear at first to be a science-fiction survival story, but beneath its space voyage, humour, and alien friendship lies a deeply theological reflection on vocation, consent, sacrifice and hope.

The film follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory, only to discover that he has been sent on a mission to save humanity. Grace's journey can be read beside Mary's Fiat in the Gospel: "Let it be done to me according to your word." Grace's salvation is not simply in solving a cosmic problem; it is in becoming capable of self-gift. Across species, language, and biology, they discover that personhood is relational. The film also reflects the Incarnation in a subtle way.

In the end, Project Hail Mary insists on hope. Even when life feels like a "ship" we did not build and a mission we did not choose, grace can still emerge.

A Pastoral Letter issued by the Archbishop of Bombay, His Grace Archbishop John Rodrigues, on May 25, 2026, (and published in The Examiner and the archdiocesan website on May 29, 2026) has addressed the recent controversy surrounding the “Ecumenical Catholic Church of Christ” and consequently its members present in the Archdiocese.

The Pastoral letter lays down the canonical conditions for full communion with the Catholic Church based on Canon 205 of the Code of Canon Law. Based on this, the archbishop states that the “Ecumenical Catholic Church of Christ” is NOT in full communion with the Catholic Church and NOT in communion with the Holy Father Pope Leo XIV. The word ‘Catholic’ in its title is misleading and should not give Catholics the impression that this Church is in communion with the One Catholic and Apostolic Church.

The archbishop goes on to warn Catholics against participating in any liturgical/prayer/sacramental services conducted by said church, which would result in spiritual risk and going against the discipline and communion of the Catholic Church. The archbishop warns against confusion and misinformation which is endemic to the present times.

Catholic lay faithful who have any doubts and questions are encouraged to approach their parish priest or the Chancery at Archbishop’s House.
