Dr. Adinath Patil, first year Junior Resident in the Department of Medicine of our Institute, allegedly died by su***de by injecting himself with an anaesthetic drug during duty hours at the Group of TB Hospitals in Sewri on Monday, 31st July.

In view of the unfortunate passing of Dr. Patil, the Institute held a condolence meet, organised by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), led by the Dean Dr. Sangeeta Ravat, the Academic Dean Dr. Harish Pathak and HOD Psychiatry Dr. Neena Sawant. Students and residents shared touching anecdotes about the life of the departed soul. Neena ma’am addressed the students in the beginning and addressed some pressing issues faced by the students. Dean ma’am offered everyone an open-mic, gracefully answering hurting voices in the Institute, courageously facing criticism and sternly promising corrective action against misconduct. Academic Dean promised protection to students who fear persecution for speaking up.
The gathering saw shocking incidents finally surfacing thanks to this initiative.

The gathering continued and ended on a somber note as an unfortunate continuation of a worrying trend in our profession. But hopefully, it will sprout urgently required redressal.

The Larynx offers its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Patil and prays for peace to his soul.

The Larynx pays homage to late Dr. Vandana Das, 23 year old on duty doctor at Kottarakkara Government Hospital Taluk, Kollam, Kerala.
A candlelight vigil was held in Seth G S Medical college and KEM Hospital by the doctors, residents, interns and students to pay condolences, near gate no. 1, KEM, at 6:30pm, 11 May, 23.
Dr. Vandana Das who was serving as a house surgeon was brutally stabbed multiple times on 10th May in morning around 4:30 am with scissors by a 42-year-old school teacher S Sandeep, who was brought to the hospital by police for treatment of an wound injury he suffered earlier.
According to the health staff, the assailant Sandeep was under the influence of alcohol and was out of control.
“Sandeep was restless and he jumped out of the dressing bed, shouted at the staff, rushed outside where policeman and Binu, his relative were standing, might have grabbed the scissors from the procedure room, his primary target was his relative, since policeman and home guard tried to stop him, he stabbed policeman” said Jayanthi, a nursing assistant and Rajesh, the ambulance driver.
He then went berserk, attacking anyone he could find, Sandeep inhumanly stabbed Dr. Vandana who froze and couldn’t run and was left alone in room. He was stabbing her in her back even after the doctor collapsed to the floor.
“A comprehensive investigation will be held into the incident, and the government will take strong action in attacks on doctors and healthcare professionals” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. [Source: TOI]
