Everyday, people from different states come to Mumbai searching for employment and settle in make-shift houses as the cost of real estate is unbearable. They play a significant role in shaping the economic capital of India through their services. As of today, 6.5 million slum dwellers live on just 8% of Mumbai's tenable land while the 9 largest private land owners control 20% of tenable land in the city. BMC carries out slum demolition drives on a regular basis. One such demolition took place in Chembur's Nagewadi on 28th November 2015. Our community correspondent Amol Lalzare reports on how life goes on a few days after the demolition.

Until 2015, ration card holding urban households in the state were entitled to maximum 24 litres of subsidised kerosene. In August this year, the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection department of Maharashtra state government issued a resolution as per which the maximum quota of subsidised kerosene available to any urban household was fixed at 4 litres.

Many families have reduced food consumption or have switched to non-nutritious food items purchased from the market such as biscuits and vada pav because they cannot afford the fuel to cook food.
